This video is worth watching in terms of getting an idea for what editors charge and to appreciate different editing styles and techniques. It is worth noting a couple of things:

1) Some editors shortchange themselves and don't charge enough (clients willing to pay more for better work).

2) Having a theme or idea helps.

3) Common transitions used include speed ramping, zooming in and out, rotating shot, defocusing and focusing, slides, and reversing footage. The most expensive edit and the one the client liked involved a lot of reversing playback.

4) Most edits follow in order and use short straight cuts, cutting on action, and cutting on movement of the shot.
