Revisiting Ext. Monitor issues

I shall eagerly await further posts on this subject during the next few days. I will be somewhat busy putting together my new VV system which has for the most part arrived. Ever since my very first computer, a Heathkit H-89 equipped with a Zilog Z-80 running at 1 MHz, and loaded with 64k of RAM the arrival of new parts means great joy, I love this part!

Those were the days. Never built a Heathkit computer, did do the 27 inch color TV.

I'm using a IWill XP333-R system board and have no problems, meaning no jittering during previews on external monitor.

It uses the ALi MAGiK 1ALi chipset, ALi M1647 (North Bridge)and AliM1535D+ (South Bridge). Currently using a AMD XP 1900+ CPU with no overclocking, 266 DDR memory. When I first put it together I went with the slower 200 memory just because I had some. Curiously, Windows was extremely unstable and blew the kernel constantly regardless what BIOS setting I tried. I couldn't get the faster 333 memory.

I think, its not a motherboard or chipset problem.
I have an ASUS P4B266-E board with Intel chipset and also the problem with the preview.
So, once more I really think the problem is within VV3 because
1. No other application within the same Windows installation has the problem (I tested Premiere 6.02, Premiere 6.5, Ulead MSPro 6.5)
2. Even within VV3 there is no problem when "Printing to Tape" instead of "Previewing".

Johannes- what you describe sounds like a settings issue in Vegas.

I think you have captured PAL DV, yes?

Is your project set to PAL DV?

HeathKit!
I wish I would have taken on the computer kit. Those were the days indeed! I built the Audio EQ, Active Audio Processor, and the big bookshelf speakers. Still have everything, still use the speakers(with new woofer/midrange drivers but the tweeters and crossovers are still hanging in there...built in 1978). Feeling old now.

Using Epox 8KHA+/VIA chipsets...NO issues, but perhaps due to VIA coming out with new 4 in 1 drivers every.....month. Same for epox bios, each one better than the one before. AMD 1.4 GHz Athlon, and I'm trying to "break it"....by OC'ing. Love Beta testing.

Daniel:

forgive me for maybe missing something obvious. What suggestions did the EPM give you?

Johannes: That's an i845d chipset, right? If so then my idea is moot...

Well, time to revive this thread. All of a sudden I am experiencing it in a big way. Only ONE change: I quit using a Sony TRV20 for passthrough to RCA plugs on the Sony PVM 1353DM monitor, and am now using a DataVideo DAC2 and YUV component output to the Sony PVM 1353DM monitor. Quality of the image is supurb, but now I get white flashes, and/or black flashes. I can replay the same spot from the time line and the flash will be somewhere else. I have no problems with the rendered video, only the output from Firewire through the DAC 2 to the external monitor. Nothing else has changed in months. If I change back to the TRV20 and RCA cables, no flashes at all.

SonicEPM, SonicDennis, is this normal?
SonyEPM wrote on 11/11/2002, 8:33 AM
This is NOT normal. The fact that you can print to a camera just fine but run into problems with the D/A converter seems to point to a problem with the converter. Maybe the converter isn't defective- are there any dip switches or other controls that might be improperly set?
wcoxe1 wrote on 11/11/2002, 11:13 AM
The ONLY control that I am told to set is to press the ENCODE 12/16 Bit button to turned it on for Windows 2000 mode. There are no other switches, or mention of any, in the instructions.

Let me just add to this by saying i have a Sony Vaio P4 with 2.0Ghz and 512MB RAM and when I use the external monitor the picture is COMPRESSED. Only when something is rendered is it clear. This is impossible to do on a long project. I have had to tell my clients that that is just the way it is--compressed in preview but crystal clear in print-to-tape. I hope this problem can be cleared up. It doesn't present a good picture of VV3 and my company just became a VV3 dealer!

"that is just the way it is--compressed in preview but crystal clear in print-to-tape."

Set preview quality to "good" and right click on the preview window and select "display at project size". External DV preview quality over will now be 100% wysiwyg (you may have to prerender if you are getting less than full frame rate- system dependent).

The DAC-2 converter has been sent back to see if it is at fault. They couldn't figure out what was wrong by eMail, so they called me and we talked it over for about 1 hour before they asked that I send it back for examination. I'll let you know if things work out for the better. Should take about 10 days from 15 November.
