Ripping DVD - no audio

DB73 wrote on 3/17/2009, 5:38 AM
I'm trying to import some home made DVD content into Vegas Movie Studio. But however I do this I end up with video but no audio. I've tried doing the same thing on a friends machine who uses Vegas Pro & it works okay.

I understand this could be because of a missing codec. But how do I indetify & obtain the codec I need? Or could there be another problem that's causing this?

Thanks

I should add that the ripped VOB files play fine in Windows Media player with sound. But when I use these files in Vegas I only get video.

Are you using Project->Import DVD Camcorder Disc? If so, also had a problem when importing DVDs I'd created myself with DVDA Studio. The resulting MP2 files played fine in WMP, but when I placed clips on the timeline the audio was missing. Sony support says the import will only rip DVDs created in a camcorder and the function is not intended to be used otherwise. I have a suspicion that there may be a limitation here to prevent abuse.

The exact wording is "* Footage that was created from something other than a DVD camcorder is not officially supported in Vegas."

Use handbrake to rip the dvd to wmv for instance, link: http://handbrake.fr/?article=download

Try renaming the .vob files to .mpg and see if they open in Vegas.

Interesting. Thanks for the response. Strange how it works differently on the full Pro version. I guess less people use that version & then more professional people so it's less open to be abused. On the other hand if Sony say it's only intended for material from camcorder DVD's & that's what I'm ripping from then are the restrictions actually stopping people from using this feature at all?

Think I've already tried renaming the files but still no joy when importing into Vegas.

The version I have comes with Sound Forge so I did think of trying to open the movie file in there as a way to extract the audio. I can then import this into my version of Vegas.

I'll Also give Handbrake a try.

Thanks for the replies.

I renamed the .vob to .mpeg and the audio was there when I opened it in Vegas MS. No audio when renamed .mpg.
