Ripple Edit?

Ok, obviously I don't use this feature, because I don't know what it is. But can somebody explain exactly what Rippled Edit is and what it does?

Maybe I'm missing out on a feature that I should use...

Ripple edit would mean that once you select something and then delete it all of the audio to the right will slide over and be put in the place of the audio you had just deleted.
