ripple editing

I want to trim the beginning of a clip (alt+drag?) while at the same time have clips that are after it on the timeline move forward. If I trim 5sec. of a clip I want the other clips to move up 5sec. I don't want to select and cut because I have a transition at the beginning of this clip. I have ripple edit on. How do I do this?

This confused me too (and I still think it's unintuitive in a very intuitive program)
Instead of dragging the clip, drag just above the ruler so that you 'select' the bit you want to trim. Then hit the Del key, or press Ctrl-X, and it will all move up as the bit you selected is removed.

Move forward=to the left. I don't want to create a "hole". I want everything further down the timeline to move forward at the same time that I trim the beginning of the clip.
