Roland SI-24 Studio Interface Control Surface and Vegas 5

jerbecca wrote on 5/25/2004, 12:13 AM
Anyone using Roland's SI-24 Studio Interface Control Surface with Vegas 5 (or 4 for that matter). I'm considering getting one and would like some feedback as to how good the interaction is with the software.

Can you control Vegas' parameters with it (volume, pan, surround, etc.)?

Thanks, in advance, for any information.

Jeremy

Guess not.

jerbecca,
While I'm not using this device, it does have midi control functions, which means you can hand-program vegas for it. No specific XML exists for it, so far as I know.
The Mackie Control is the only HUI currently coded within Vegas, but I've taught Vegas to read my Oxygen and Radium keyboards. Works great.

The one thing I would check is that all the controls including the tranport buttons etc send MIDI and not MCC

The generic driver supports MIDI only. One of the guys on the audio forum had an expensive control surface that send MCC commands for some of controls

Is that the Radikal? It doesn't work so well. I'm sure there are others, I just happen to have one of those.
The Tascam 424 is also usable, if only for volume, pan, mutes, and shuttling.

I think it was the Yamaha O3D, just struck me as one of those gotchas that would leave you pulling your hair out

Please note, if your midi controller sends MMC, I can help you, mail me at natcl@hotmail.com.

Hey, thanks so much for the responses.

Here's where I'm at. My brother actually got the Roland SI-24 so we tried to hook it up and make it work. We immediately went to my copy of Vegas 5 and started having it "learn" the faders and controls from the SI-24. It was learning everything and adding MIDI message information to its lists. But, when we tried actual automation, nothing happened in either direction. Vegas wouldn't receive anything from the control surface and the control surface wouldn't receive anything from Vegas. I then tried to update the audio input driver of our control surface (which is for the RPC-1 card by M-Audio), and then we were able to get audio into Vegas, but Vegas was no longer able to "learn" from the controler. Strange.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm trying to get my brother to purchase Vegas, and he's very interested, but if it won't work with the control surface he just bought, he's going to go elsewhere. I know it should work though. Help! :-)

There is an option to toggle automation control on /off, it must be assigned to a button on the controller.

Could you tell me a bit more about that?

I think we did toggle it on in Vegas from the menu, but nothing happened and we're not really sure where to go from there.
