Rookie has audio question - please help!

I'm trying to record voice over in a project and no matter what I try, I'm getting an audible hiss.

I first tried recording directly into my g-force sound card using sound forge and both a uni and omni directional stick mic. (Disaster) So, then I decided to try recording into my Sony trv10 mini dv camera via a sony wcs-999 wireless mic. The result there was much better, but I'm still getting hiss.

How do I eliminate the noise? Am I missing something here? Do I need a different mic. set up? Is there a tab setting somewhere for my sound card I can adjust or a plug-in that will help in either Vegas or Sound Forge?

Please Help, I'm going insane!

Thanks,

JG

Not a whole lot of info to go on. You need to narrow it down to the source of the "hiss".

Is this hiss only coming from the mic source? What kind of mic? Is it balanced or unbalanced? You mentioned a wireless system...can you monitor the output from the microphone receiver to see if the hiss is present there?

Could be a grounding issue. I use "pro" mics...balanced. I also go through an external mixing console before hitting the sound card.

Try to eliminate everything in the signal path until you isolate the source. If its the mic, then you need to consider an alternative.

P.S.: Some inexpensive condenser microphones get noisy when the battery is getting low.

Also make sure that the MIC input is not enabled in your windows mixer, because this could be recorded along with your LINE IN input causing the hiss from the Mic Input.
