Royalty Free Music - 2 excellent sources

Here's a couple of excellent sources for royalty-free music:

incompetech.com - Kevin MaCleod is basically a genius and a prolific one at that. He has a huge range of music here and all he wants is a credit. His "silent movie" music is brilliant. His other main strength is dark piano music but there's plenty beyond that.

musopen.com - loads of classical music here. It's "public domain" music because the copyright has expired but I'm not entirely sure it can be used in video projects for profit (from the performer's point of view).

Will have to try embedding a video in the forum some time then. Looks like it would have to be from Grouper.com as YouTube's still banned over here.

Can anyone comment on whether the material on Musopen is likely to be royalty-free for use in profit-making projects?

legally, "public domain" means it's up for grabs, although there are some caveats, for details see http://www.copylaw.com/new_articles/PublicDomain.html

from the FAQ at http://www.musopen.com/help.html

A: The music on this site is given a public domain license, therefore, there are technically no restrictions on what you do with it. We do ask, out of courtesy, two things. One, that you do not directly sell our recordings for profit, as a great amount of work has been donated to this project, and for the benefit of the public, not profit. Two, we ask that any commerical or derived works attribute Musopen somewhere, to give credit to this project. And for all the film students emailing, yes you may use it in your film, you can then sell the film, containing our music. It's in the public domain afterall.
