rule of thumb

does anyone know of a site or where I can get information on common practices in video. I would like to know how long one should make a transition. should it be 2sec 5sec or 7sec. little thinks to have structure in video understanding and editing. I know that you can do what ever you like but I would like to have something to go on so that i can build from there and get better at video editing. Thanks you all of you in advance.

Volumes have been written on the subject...

For starters I recommend Walter Murch's "In The Blink of an Eye", a fine, easy read from one of the very best editors in the biz.
