Save project with trimmed source files

relaxvideo wrote on 11/23/2015, 3:28 PM
I remember those good old days, when i edited a DV project, and could save it with trimmed source files. Is there any solution now in HD days? (in fact i use 3D-HD projects..)

Rendering the film to one big file is not a solution, because i like to edit later with a new clip order.. But don't want to preserve big recorded footages.

"Copy media with project" option unfortunately copy whole source files, not trimmed ones. Why?

thanks

Vegas only trims files with discreet frames. Most modern HD formats are GOP (group of pictures) formats, in which the data to construct a frame's image may be dependent on earlier or later frames. The Vegas programmers chose to deal with this by not trimming.

There are third party utilities that will trim such files for you outside of your project. If you know where your edit points are going to be you could trim first, then use the trimmed versions in your project.

Vegasaur has such a feature as part of the Project archiving feature; it allows you to select to only archive trimmed versions of the orginal with the project.

It seems like then you'd not only still have to include the full, untrimmed versions if you want to keep them, but do it manually.

Chienworks:
thanks, i also thinked that. But it seems it's not true, because i just tried with a discreet frames video (Canopus HQ codec) and Vegas copy the whole file again, so not use trim. Why? When i render timeline to this codec, smart recompress works, so Vegas can use this codec flawlessly.

I don't know first in a many hour project, which part of the source file will i need, so i cannot trim first.

OldSmoke: thanks, but i ask about HD files.

Wrong one. Try "smart-trim" under Vegasaur render options. It's considered "experimental" so it may or may not work for your particular footage. Just tried it on some GoPro 2.7K footage and it didn't work.
