rerender the file but this time, uncheck the type 2 avi file compliant box in the render dialog, under the "custom' button

Spot, hello mate, thanks for you comments, they are welcome. I tried what you suggested but to no availd i'm afraid, powerpoint says "cannot dsplay this type of movie or sound". Could you go through the process for me again, from selecting "render as" in the file menu. . . etc. Sorry for being thick, but I am just starting out. Regards. . . .

You have to render an uncompressed avi. Then you should be okay

I'm not to sure about that as the file size may be too large. We use either mpeg 1 or wm9. Both play back exceptionally well from CD within Powerpoint.

Click Render as
Choose Video for Windows
Click the Custom button
Under the Video tab you'll find a check box "Create an OpenDML (AVI version 2.0) compatible file"
Uncheck it
Render

If the above does not work take a look in Preferences under the Options menu. There's another checkbox in the General tab "Strictly conform to AVI2 specification". Check or uncheck this and try again.
