Saving a Rendered DV project

Is there a way to render a project to DV quality with dependencies on the original DV files?

When I print to DV device, the project renders the video and audio sections before printing to tape. This takes forever when there are many rendered sections. If I close the project and return to it later to print another copy, it rerenders everything again before printing to tape.

I came to VV 3 after using Edit DV. Edit DV provided the option of saving the rendered file with dependencies, which saved only the rendered sections, resulting in a small file. The next time you open the project, all the renders were still there. Printing to tape did not require rerendering (unless further edits were made).

The reason I need to print to tape more than once is that I print VHS copies directly from my HDD. As long as I make all the copies during the same session, it is not a problem. But when I close the project and reopen it later, I'm back to square one.

TIA.

After you render, save it.

What I normally do is save as filename_render.

Thanks, but when I do this, it still rerenders everything before printing to tape. The previously rendered files become detached from the project.

I know I can render the entire project as an .AVI (DV settings), but this takes an enormous amount of drive space. I have two 90-minute videos on the HDD, and rendering them to a new file requires another 40 gig. This is why I would like to save only the rendered sections with everything else still dependent on the original DV files.

I think I understand what you're saying.. Try this:
From the menu, select Options|Preferences, click the General tab & put a check next to "Save active prerenders on project close". Now when you close Vegas, the prerendered files will not be automatically deleted.

Also, before you print to tape (and render the video), you should also select File|Properties & verify the location of the "Prerendered files folder". If you change it so that the source material & prerender video is kept in the same folder, it makes for easier file management.
