Saving projects with External media

In the option concerning the saving of a project with External media, will all the external media that has been captured be saved or will only the selected media used in the project be saved ?

all media in the project and the media pool will be saved to a new location (media will be duplicated).

What are the common work methods. Does one capture all the media one needs to make a video, save the finalised film back on the camcorder or to a file. Due to disk space all the media files will need to be deleted. If all the media files are removed, is the project file of any use ?
