Scanning for CD devices takes forever

My CD Architect 5.2 does not work, because "Scanning for CD devices" takes forever. The program just hangts and I have to kill it using task manager.
DVD architect works fine.
On the machine in question, I have one SATA DVD burner, that's all. Can this be the cause? On another machine, I have an IDE DVD burner, and here CD Architect works fine.

It also seems that Windows has problems burning files to the DVD drive, but I am not sure because I have never tried it directly in Windows.
Any ideas?

Could be that it's a SATA drive. The burning thing would likely be unrelated (media/speed/drive ineraction ?).

One thing that could fix both is to update the drive firmware - but grasping at straws here...

Make sure you have the proper drivers for your burner installed. When the internal dvd drive stopped burning discs in my one music pc I got an external HP USB 2.0 drive and had to install drivers.

I have the latest driver and have flashed the device using the latest firmware. Does not help.
It is a little strange, isn't it? Two similar pieces of software, coming from the same company, and one worksI(DVDA), the other not(CDA).
And Windows Explorer has no probs burning music, it is only CDA. But I much prefer CDA to Windows Explorer.

DVDA is under continuing development, but CDA hasn't been updated for over three years, sadly.

May be relevant to your problem, or not.
