1 - No particularly defined limit. DV tapes hold data, not a video signal. It's the format of the data that may or may not have a limit.

2 - Most are optimized for 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL), but some can take stills at higher resolutions.

3 - 2048x2048

4 - What else? HD is about 2 to 3 times the area of NTSC. 70mm film is probably capable of at least 7200x4800 resolution.

I guess it is the cameras that limit the resolution. I have heard of some cameras mentioned on this forum whose "footage" will be transerred to 35mm film -Diego

I just watched "28 Days Later" on High def cable the other night.
I believe it was shot with Panny 100a's if I remember correctly.
It looked pretty good for being DV upconverted and displayed 1080i
