Script for workflow Vegas > After Effects..

I guess I am not alone in needing a reliable workflow to take my edits from Vegas into AE for VFX, color correction etc.

I haven't had much luck using Vegas EDLs or AAF files, so I got interested when danyx at the Rebel Cafe forum offered to develop an AE script to split a rendered video edit based on its EDL.

Anyway... I've tweaked danyx's script so it specifically handles the .txt files available from Vegas' "File>Save as..." option.

With VP8 smart render this means you can bring in one rendered file which contains all the frames of your edit, copied directly from the source footage with no recompression... and split the file back into its component cuts for work in AE.

I hope this makes sense... if you want to try out the AE script it is here...

The EDL export via scripting exports a real EDL (not the fake/quasi-EDL from file save as). Does that not work with danyx's script? (Sorry I haven't tried.)

Nonetheless, this looks like a useful script. Last time I tried to do this (working with FCP) I manually notched/split the video edit based off of reading an EDL.

2- AAF seems to work for me. (FCP doesn't output AAF without the help of Automatic Duck... gr....)

On my projects at least, the supplied script for EDL export refuses to work - it just reports "Object required", so I wasn't able to test that. And Vegas' AAFs were causing After Effects to hang.

Side benefits of this smart-render approach are

1) you're effectively working on a backup of your selected project footage, rather than the captured clips
2) it means only one footage file in AE as opposed to hundreds

If you don't have Automatic Duck, you need to go to more swag-loaded FCPUG meetings :O).

In the meantime there is the free FCPToAE Script.
