SCS TO OFFER OPTICAL FLOW...?

Comments

I post what I think are some useful suggestions,

My Motion Estimation Suggestions

which in no way denigrate Sony, its products, or its business practices, and I get a snarky response which really serves no useful purpose other than to call me a clueless idiot who should know better than to have suggested something to Sony because they are not allowed to accept advice from someone not on the payroll. By that logic, they should never listen to any customer, competitor, or trade journal article.

I now remember why I left these forums seven months ago, and why I will now leave again. The lack of professional conduct and respect for each other has become stunning.

What has happened to these forums, and why isn't Sony giving the boot to people who have increasingly made this a hostile place to post?

For fifteen years, I have done everything that I do professionally simply to try to help others in the computer business so that they can hopefully become as fortunate as I was able to be. Virtually all of my work is without pay, for example:

Lessons from a Garage

Where did all these nasty people come from, and what did I do to deserve such comments?

I don't care. It works, and that's all that matters, isn't it?

Yes. What else?

I was just mentioning its long lineage because there is a tendency for many to think that everything cool is always something "totally new under the sun."

You're not proselytizing are you, Bjorn?

No, I don't have anything at stake to proselytize for.

I use a Mac and a PC side by side every day, each for whatever it does best, and I don't get even a cup of coffee for recommending one or the other.

I love using Vegas for video editing, for reasons I have written about here in the past.

With FCP, my enthusiasm is tempered by the clunkiness of the old editing paradigm, and the clunkiness of the ancient warmed over spaghetti code that is even today's FCP.

Unfortunately, that old spaghetti code, with the "time honored" user interface, is sometimes not only the best solution, it is the only solution.

FCP can do many things that Vegas can't do even with extreme workarounds, so it's a good tool to have on hand.

Vegas speedy editing paradigm is also no match for FCP with the right plug-in to do the work for you. FCP is part of a huge eco-system with 3rd-party suppliers for every need.

But for stuff that Vegas can handle, it has no equal.

And if Vegas one day gets a modern plug-in API, outside developers can provide the functionality that SCS isn't interested in making a part of Vegas itself.

Well I certainly hope you don't leave. You are one of the main reasons I come to this forum. Your advice and programming are absolutely top notch.

I think anyone speaking up in a public [Internet] forum today needs to have thick skin.

Especially in a forum with a mix of professionals and hobbyists, where it is like in academia: nothing at stake except someone's ego, so there is no cost to being rude.

In business it's a lot more difficult to get away with that, when paychecks don't just appear in an envelope automagically.

In all fairness, I think some people are not intentionally rude, it's just that they don't have good people skills.

They simply don't see the damage they're creating.

Stay the course John...Don't be ruffled by this apit34356 fellow.

John (Meyer), I'm confused, which usually doesn't take much. Where in this thread has anyone been disrespectful? No one in this thread called you a "clueless idiot."

And your "snarky response" links back to this thread (as does your previous link). Is it possible you were referring to the "other thread"?

P.S. I agree with Bjorn. Sometimes there is a miscommunication, but all too often some folks go out of their way to be nasty.

"Stay the course John...Don't be ruffled by this apit34356 fellow."

Oh, is that what John was referring to? I missed that post somewhere along the way.

Now, let's get back on track, if we may, pleeeeaaasse!

I hope nobody leaves. John you are one of my favorite people here. I Thank YOU for everything. Even with all the tension here this forum teaches us a lot. I think the tension has produced some great posts explaining some of the positions, sometimes it has not.

As I stated in my post, JohnMeyer has been very helpful to many forum members with his suggestions. But that does not mean he has a free pass on professional conduct in the business world. Any IP attorney or corp attorney can usually explain what is wrong with John's presentation about saving SCS, if one is not schooled in business standards.

John can point out SCS's many failing and that is "his choice" but does not mean he is correct nor he is providing insight not already known. And John can state his analyze, that's cool too on this or any forum if he chooses to. The problem I have or any corp suit or scientist would have is being told that "someone furnished" an unsolicited plan and that SCS is a failure for not following it.

Outside John's business model issue, JohnMeyer is a good guy, I think, and I think the forum is better with his contributions, which are many.
