Search for missing file--LAME!

I don't know where to add suggestions but if someone tells me, I will add this one if it isn't already there.

When Vegas opens a project and can't find a file it presents an options dialogue box asking what you want to do about it.

One of the options is Search for missing file. This would be a great option if it allowed you to select folders and not just letter drives in Windows.

As it is, it's nearly useless because to search my C: drive takes about 10 minutes per file If I could point it to the folder that holds all my audio media files, it would take about 30 seconds.

Thanks.

That's what the option "Specify a new location or replacement file" is there for. Does exactly what it says.

But searching for the file, even if I "hide" it in strange places on the drive, takes 2-3 seconds to find. I'm absolutely not able to duplicate your "10 minutes" to find a file on the hard drive, whether local or attached.

steve:

check to see if you have the Windows Indexing option disabled. Many people do disable this because it is a constantly running background task that causes system and disk activity when there otherwise wouldn't be any (that's when it builds and updates the index.)

Indexing does significantly speed up searching. So you just have to decide if the extra overhead is worth the benefits.

musicvd, you're not fully understanding my issue. I don't want to manually specify a new location or new file to replace the missing one.

I want Vegas to search for the missing file on my computer. As I stated, currently there is no easy way to designate a specific folder to search within. You can only specify a drive letter.

I'm suggesting that it would be a good feature to be able to specify a folder to search in addition to an entire drive letter.

I'll add it as a suggested feature in a future release.

Thanks guys.

Hi Steve:

I'm using VMSPP 9.0 and whenever I get the "search for file" message, I am always able to specify a folder for the search. I understand the value of being able to search an entire drive, but I am always very orderly about where I put my video clips, photos, and music. So being able to specify a folder is of great value to me because it usually only takes a few seconds to find my media.

If this is what you are looking for and you are unable to do this, please post again. I will try to post a step-by-step. (Maybe I have a setting on my computer that is different than yours and that is why I can specify a folder for the search.)

Good luck!

Kim
