See Vegas and After Effects playing together

Just wanted to show a short segement I did with vegas and AE. It is an animation for a DVD intro.

I renderend 5 clips in Vegas to uncompressed AVIs.

I then brought all 5 avis into AE and made them 3d layers. I added a camera, motion blur, a text layer and then made it dance.

Then I rendered it as an uncompressed AVI. I brought that AVI into vegas and rendered a copy for the web and one for DVD.

looks pretty cool, could you not duplicate that 3D effect using satish's 3Dpluginpack? I have done some similar looking effects with vegas and teh 3dpp.

probably easier the way you did it tho...

Amazing effect. Would be interesting to see if it COULD be approximated in Vegas with 3DLE and several tracks.
BillyBoy wrote on 6/5/2003, 10:20 PM
Sure you can do that in Vegas.

Yup....I would have to agree that the clip could be done in Vegas with ease.

Looks good though.

Wow. Nice work Matt!!! :D

Sorry, I don't think this can be done is Vegas, but I'd love to see someone prove me wrong. I just tried it, and while it's easy to get the layers to fly in and stack on top of one another using 3DLE, there's no way to make the layers spin in 3D space. If you try rotating the entire project by adding 3DLE to the project FX properties, it rotates the composite image as though it's a 2D plane, essentially rotating whatever image lands on top.

Vegas is a powerful video editor, but a 3D renderer it is not.

Alright, fine so I proved myself wrong.

I'll bet it's simpler to do in AE, but it's apparently possible in Vegas. The first trick is setting the pivot point of each layer to the center of the virtual "cube" of images, in this case the same point in space as the third and middle image. Then if you rotate each track, they rotate around the same point in space.

The second trick is making the layer orders flip flop when they spin 180 degrees. By default, Vegas (or the 3DLE plug-in) still displays the top layer on top, even though it's behind the others in 3D space. I just duplicated each layer, reversed the order, and used those for the split second when they're spun around, then cut back to the original set.

If I did it over I'd place the layers closer together, like in theigloo's video (thanks for the inspiration dude), but this at least proves it's possible. If anyone is interested, I can upload the project file to the Sundance media archive.

Just wondering, anybody considering getting Boris Red for Vegas?

Luxo that was sweet. Thanks for doing it.

I love the fact that there's only about 40 mins between your posts. You're very nimble.

To tell you the truth, I had no idea about Satish 3dpp. You learn something every day. I'm an avid winMorpher so I can't beleive I missed it. I can't wait to try it out.

From the look of your animation, it doesn't look like the 3dpp has a concept of a camera. Does it? (i guess I'll find out).

What I like about AE is that it's smart enough to motion blur the parts of the objects moving fast relative to the camera. If you frame-by-frame my animation, you'll see the how accurate it is; it blurs the outside of the frames at the start (where the frames fly thru the camera) and then it blurs the corners of the frames as the camera rotates around them.

I have a 3d comp with 30 videos in it. They all round up and form an igloo (the logo of my site). I'm going to try to have it done by the end of next week.

PS - in case anyone's interested - there have been 115 downloads since I posted this thread less than 24 hours ago. We've got a pretty healthy community here.

Hey Matt,

You're exactly right, 3DLE can't move the camera position, which meant rotating the entire set around the same axis point. Also, I tried adding motion blur to the effect but, unlike yours, the video layers are constantly blurred, even when static.

I also like how you started the rotation before the final layer landed, which would be much harder in 3DLE, if it's even possible. Again, would be easier with camera control.

Overall, your version clearly has more professional sheen, but it was a fun challenge to do solely in Vegas. And yeah, Satish's 3DLE plug-in is sharp. Looking forward to your igloo video, and I won't be attempting to reproduce that one.

I uploaded the project file to the Sundance media archive. It should pop up after approval, if anyone wants to experiment.

I purchased RED 2.5 so I would get 3GL for free when it ships. So far I've been having a lot of fun with the program. It makes complicated motion effects very easy.
