Don't start on the "Professional Environment" argument. It is a subjective statement at best.
Templates have been discussed, but with the scripting capabilities and enhancements to what will be scriptable, template type functinality is going to be a very customizable aspect in the future. There will be no need for templates in the traditional sense, but rather custom scripts to create working sets.
I believe there are some "template like" scripts available in the scripting forum already.
I don't want to start an argument with you Peter, and yes of course it is very subjective. But, I do think certain things <are> expected in a professional environment. I have no doubt whatsoever that Vegas is a professional piece of software. I use it day in, day out, in a professional broadcast environment, and I love it.
However, I do think that the lack of something like templates is somewhat of an oversight; most DAWs have this feature and it is very useful, especially when you need to work fast. The current way of working with 'templates' is clumsy - having to open and re-save an existing project.
The problem with implementing this with scripts is that - to me at least - it all seems a bit fiddly. I don't want to have to wait for a user to write a script, and then work out how to use it, etc. Something as simple (?) as templates, should arguably be a core part of the software. Moreover, the DAW market is very competitive and, from a business point of view, to attract new, pro customers you don't really want to have to tell people "yes, you can use templates, but first you'll have to crawl the web for some scripts which may or may not have been written, and then work out how to use them. Of course you won't get any support on these because they haven't been endorsed by Sonic Foundry".
I agree that work flow would be enhanced with a template like mechanism. I am all for it.
The power of scripts is that it permits us to implement such features with out having to release a new version. As the scripting capabilities of Vegas increase - i.e. more things in detail are scriptable - then the ability to provide things like templates will be far easier than implementing a hard coded template model.
In the end, templates are something we have discussed and we will be looking for a balance between functionaltiy and configuratbiltiy. No promises, as usual.
Ok, but how about SoFo makes the scripts thing a bit more official and makes them easier to find? In other words, a section on the website containing scripts, perhaps some of them programmed by you guys. As far as I know, there is no such page at the moment...
This is a very good idea and I am sure the scripting guys here are all over this concept. The only reason I can think of this not existing today is both the Sony thing and the relative newness of the scripting engine.
