Just to be clear, are you talking about creating a Loop Area?

I am selecting a time range for further editing like cut, delete etc.

Okay, that's two different things.

If you are selecting a Loop Area, you are selecting a region of the entire timeline. You can use a Loop Area to delete a portion of your timeline or to output only a portion of your timeline.

If you are selecting events or sequences on your timeline to cut or delete, you would use a completely different tool or different method.

And how each of these function depends on how you have your Auto Ripple configured.

Can you tell us specifically what you're trying to accomplish? Once we understand that, we can certainly tell you how to do it.

I want to select a region of the timeline to work on it. I have done this as guided in the manual. The manual says the selected area will be shaded and there will be a selection bar above the area selected. When I do this, I find the selected area is shaded but there is no selection bar. I was curious to know why the seletion bar is not coming. Is the selection bar an essential feature ? If so , then how can I get that.

You should see little yellow corner indicators along the top of the timeline on either end of your Loop Region.

If you're not seeing this, make sure you're using the Normal Edit Tool and not the Envelope Edit or Selection Edit Tool. (You can select your Edit Tools by clicking the buttons along the top of the interface, above the Trimmer window.)
