Service Pack 2

Beelzebob wrote on 10/17/2004, 7:07 PM
I've been avoiding installing service pack 2 for obvious reasons, but today I read about the jpeg virus, which is not a problem with SP2 installed. I'm guessing a lot of MS users have only one pc and need it to do several things. Have any MS users installed SP2? There are two threads on the vegas forum - one person had temporary problems. The consensus was that your video editing pc should be dedicated. That's not an option for me, not anytime soon. Any thoughts?

I've not installed SP2 for the same reasons that you cite. I believe that there is a patch for SP1 that addresses the jpeg issue. Although the Windows Update software has been changed, it still permits you to select and install only the updates that you want to install. If you don't want SP2 yet, you should be able to deny its installation.

I installed SP2 and have had no problems what so ever. My machine seems to be running fine.

I installed it and everything on my machine has worked fine. I have not done any exensive editing since installation. But I don't foresee any problem.

I agree.

Forget all the web noise. Service Pack 2 works just fine.

Problems are much rarer than you've been led to believe, and most are related to software that hasn't been properly updated. (Though I prefer to use Zone Alarm's free firewall to the Windows firewall -- and SP2 and Zone Alarm's latest work very well together.)

BTW, if you don't want to download the 80 megs or wait for Microsoft to send you a disk (which usually arrive in about a week), you can get free SP2 disks at any Best Buy, Circuit City or CompUSA.

are you gusy talking about MIcrosoft XP Service pack 2 or is there a movie studio service pack 2?

XP service pack 2 should be classified as a toxic virus. :-)

Actually, Chris, XP SP2 is a fairly thorough security fix for Windows and not nearly deserving of its bad press.

Or are you speaking from experience?

It's loaded and worked flawlessly for everyone I've had contact with.

SP2 caused major problems for me. All of my print dialogs were delayed. For instance, in Corel Draw 12, I would click on the print button and have to wait upwards of one minute for the dialog to appear. If I wanted to change settings I would wait again. Sometimes it just crashed.

I also started receiving memory write errors. I uninstalled all of the software I had installed after SP2, and still had problems. Uninstalling SP2 fixed all issues. I will not install SP2 until I learn the bugs are worked out.

I am speaking from experience, for what it is worth I am a Windows network engineer for a fortune 100 company and have had my MCSE for years.
When you install SP2 you risk tanking your machine.

I am delighted many people did not have their system tanked by SP2, I was certainly not one of them.

We quickly shut off MS updates to all our 70,000 desk top machines to make sure no one could install SP2.

Again, I wish I would have stayed with Windows 2000 at home and never upgraded to XP.

And soon after they released it, Microsoft shut off SP2 there for a while, no? They did that for a reason and not because it was going smoothly and everyone was happy with the results. It was because an overwhelming amount of people had their machines tanlked by it.

MSoft even has a SP2 hotline for those who had problems with SP2. They don't do things like that when things go smooth. They have an elaborate uninstall scheme that is nothing like the normal uninstall process. This is because SP2 is so deadly.

SP2 was probably the worst SP ever released and adversly affected no telling how many people before MS pulled the plug on it.

In fact can you even get SP 2 right now? Is it still turned off on the MS update site?

ps. again, yeah I know some people have not had any problems and I am delighted for them.

pss. Not wanting to sound snotty, but do you work for Microsoft? Everyone on the planet knows by now that SP2 for XP is russian roulette.

Anyhow that's my $.02 on the subject. I was just making sure there was not a SP for Sony Movie Studio.

I have installed SP2 on three PC's, no problems on any of them, but here is the number from the SP2 WebInfo site;

If you are having problems with your computer after installing Windows XP SP2, please visit our online support center(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=windowsxpsp2). You can also call (888) SP2HELP or (888) 772-4357 (United States and Canada only).

Thanks, Mr Christopher for your two cents. Yours definitely seems to be the opinion of many network engineers. And you are absolutely right -- any changes to any operating system can be risky and should be approached with caution.

But it still works fine on every machine I've installed it on and, from the postings on this board, for many others also.

So calling it Russian roulette may be a bit extreme, although there are definitely risks, though slim.

Notice no changes on this Vegas PC but had to hire a technician to reformat the drive and reinstall XP Pro sp 1a on the machine running the Matrox X100 Extreme -- Premiere crashed endlessly (ha ha, yeah I know what you are thinking but it was fairly stable before the install and after the expensive repair.

Funny this thread should pop back up today. i installed SP2 from the cd about a month ago, but after a day or 2 my WMP screen turned green and no video was diplayed. MS4 acted very slow. so i removed SP2 by doing a remove via the control panel AND did a restore to the state prior to the install.

Last night i reinstalled SP2 and everything appears to work ok so far, BUT the MS4 splash screen on 4.0 did not have my serial number displayed, and i thot it did. so i installed 4.0a and that install went fine, but i still don't have the serial number displaed in the splash screen. it is displayed in Help/About. DVDA has the serial number in the splash screen. I also had a problem with the Morgan MJPEG codec which needed to be restarted, but now works fine.

my ? is---does you MS4 have the serial number in the splash screen? and if it does, how sould i fix mine??--remove and reinstall??

thanks,
ron
