Settings for converting mpg-2 to mp4

Hi;
I am looking for an export format that allows me to do a lossless conversion of an mpeg-2 video into any format that is recognized by final cut pro. Sony Vegas can read the DVD and it can do the conversion. But i have no clue what settings and which format would be the best to use for the conversion.

Here are the Media properties of the imported Video:

Format: MPEG-2
Attributes: 720*576*32
Frame rate: 25 fps
Field Order: None
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.4568 (PAL DVD widescreen)
Color space: Default

Streams
Video: 00:50:44,880, 25,000 fps progressive, 720x576x32, MPEG-2
Audio: 00:50:42,720, 48.000 Hz; Stereo, MPEG

I thought best would be to convert to mp4 (but maybe there is a better choice ?). However, i am lost when it comes to which settings i should use. I tried for a while, but i get quality loss and audio synchronization issues. How to solve this best ? (the footage is lost, so all i have is this DVD)

thanks for any hint.

Are you saying that FCP cannot recognise standard MPEG2 as in a DVD?

Try using Sony AVC and start with the Memory Stick SD NTSC Widescreen - 6256 Kbps template and change it to your PAL specifications. That should be plenty of quality and it if's not, just increase the bit rate.

The first post said: "I am looking for an export format that allows me to do a lossless conversion of an mpeg-2 video into any format that is recognized by final cut pro. Sony Vegas can read the DVD and it can do the conversion."

So we are talking about MPEG 2 from a DVD. There are many ways to convert the VOB files from a title set in a DVD into a single MPEG 2 file, including simple concatenation using the COPY /B command. An easier way (for me) is to use the VOB2MPG utility. This is lossless conversion.

I have never used FCP, but surely it can read MPEG 2 files. If so, why convert to MP4?
