Settings for first Blu-ray disc

Cliff Etzel wrote on 10/16/2008, 4:47 PM
I'm getting ready to burn my first blu-ray direct from the timeline to a standard DVD - my project is 1440x1080-60i, and I have a PS3 and a 42" 1080p HD tv - I'm confused as to which template to use when burning direct from the timeline to a disc - the content is only 11 minutes long so it fits to standard DVD just fine - just not sure if it should be interlaced, progressive. The templates only allow for 60i - is that automatically converted when it plays? - totally confused on this.

Anyone lend a hand on this?

Cliff, looks like you didn't get an answer to your question, which is a shame because I'm searching the forum for answers to a similar question. Guess you now know the answer! In my case my video is 1920 x 1080 25P, so checking out the BD standards it seems that only 24P or 50i is available. I guess 50i will look the same as 25P when projected on a progressive HD projector. I presume I'm not limited to 1440 x 1080 50i, which is associated with mpeg-2?

I have never fully chased this up, but are the 25p modes actually not in the specification for Blu-ray? I had got the impression that there were certain headline modes, but that 25p was supported in the specification.

25p was supported in the specification.

It doesn't really have to be. If you have 50i video on a Blu-Ray and your TV supports 25p and can display 25p, 50i and 25 is identical. That is, on playback. So, if your source was 25p, you put it on a BD at 50i and play it back on a device that supports 50i to 25p, you will see 25p. If you are lucky even at 100Hz :-)

Thank is ok if it works on your system, but it would probably not be suitable for wider consumption. The aim should be to render for the correct target format.

bluprojekt,

For burning straight from the timeline, choose the 1440x1080-60i 25mbps template. As for the de-interlace selection, you should have determined that when you were first creating your project.

This came up in the DVD Architect forum before...

Looking at the Blu-ray spec link that was posted there, 25p and 30p are NOT in the Blu-ray spec.

And this was why when I tried to make DVD Architect work in 30p for Blu-ray, it refused.

This surprised me since I have made true 30p DVDs before, though not in DVD Architect.

Here's the link to the discussion thread, the white paper link to the spec is in there:

Thank you for that link -- I should have thought to check that forum. Indeed I had looked up that white paper, which indicated that which you have all said --- no 25P.
