Settings to make 4:3 widescreen?

Hey all,

I have something shot in 4:3 that I want to "convert" to widescreen to fill a client's 16:9 plasma TV they use for shows. Instead of cropping the content, I would like to make use of the "extra horizontal space" for their logo & other artwork. I tried changing the properties of the project to DV Widescreen, but it didn't change the shape of the preview or the 720x480 settings. How would I set up a project like this so I can render as widescreen?

Thanks.

KH

Hi,
The way I convert from 4:3 to w/s involves the following:-
Import the media - select properties widescreen - in track switches uncheck maintain aspect ratio - in track crop select 16:9 preset fill frame - render as widescreen output.

This will stretch the picture vertically to get the right aspect ratio, but the top and bottom will be cropped.

Hope this helps.

(if anyone else has another way then send post)

Thanks for the tip. What I am trying to accomplish is embedding the full 4:3 into the middle of a 16:9 field, able then to place design borders to fill out the two "bars" on either side and tehn render it to WS. Is this possible?

Hi again,
If I take it right you want a 4:3 picture in the middle of a 16:9 screen with a border either side that you can use, say a coloured one for simplicity.

Start off a widescreen project - import 4:3 video - leave maintain a/r checked.
You should now see in preview 4:3 picture with black border.

Anything for the border (say colour) can be achieved by adding it to a lower video track so that the "black" in the 4:3 is transparent and shows the lower track through.

By experimenting with this "border" track (crop etc) you can get your logos in the border areas.

Finally render as a w/s project.

Hope this helps.
