All Licensing agreements require a backup plan by the Licensee or Sony in this case. First right of refusal for all technology if it is to be sold and an out if it's sold to someone the Licensee objects to. There are a lot of folks who can benefit from buying the software side but Sony would probably put it under a subsidiary and continue to License it. My 2 cents anyway.

Just like all flying high software in specific categories that are exploding(like NLE) there is always a shake out and some good products get left behind and forgotten. Don't think this will happen with VEGAS thou. Upside is better than the downside but only for a company that has little or no competing produtcs but high visibility and marketing reach. That means a lot of companies may be looking at this. Hate to say it but Microsoft sure looks like a good fit. How about a LE version of Movie Factory that comes with Window XP2 and Upgrade to full Movie Factory and Vegas Video 4(it will happen) as the high end. Remember Fox Pro and rushmore technology. Of course Apple would stand to lose the most if this happens.

Have a good day!!!

I tend to agree with you Chienworks. I've posted something to this effect in one of our sister forums or even here abouts. PCs are becoming more and more powerful. Heck, the actual processing for DV work will be a miniscule part of a not too distant proceesor - no?

The first guy to produce a real-time edit/render s/w solution/product - without the need for h/w with all its accompanying fixes and breakdowns - will surely clean-up.

Oh yes DAZZLE have produced such a piece of real-time editing

I'll take a solid user interface, deep toolset, stable code and glitch free output over a RT Premiere setup. No contest.
Being as Vegas is an RGB application, don't look for it to have RT DV output anytime soon. Maybe the 64bit version will pull that off. Don't forget that background rendering will most likely be in version 4.

(( Vegas doesn't need real-time hardware. ))

Surely you jest!
Imagine Vegas with 100% realtime filters like color correction, slowmo, anything that affects the entire clip rather than only transitions. Or 3D FX in realtime record output, not just previews.

Put the Vegas interface on a RT.X100 and I'll buy it in a heartbeat for $1000 rather than any rendering version of Vegas for $500.

Maybe in a year or two there will be 100% realtime software only (not previews) but for now, I hope Matrox buys Vegas if it is really for sale.

$.02,
Mike
