Dave,
1) Above the track that has the content that is to have the 3D source alpha, insert an empty video track.
2) Make the 3D track a child of the track above.
3) Then click on the parent motion icon (to the left of the Level value) and then enable 2d shadow.
Done.

If you want a perspective shadow

Track 1 3d comp place your object “say a ball” animate the movement
Duplicate this track

Now you have track 1 and 2 both in 3d comp

Above track 2 add a new 3d track make this parent and tilt this to the desired perspective

On the child of track 2 add brightness and contrast fx to get it black and your slider for transparency levels

Now your shadow will track your object in 3d perspective

It’s easier if you buss your tracks you can cut 1 step out

Cool, thanks! I would have never figured that out myself, nothing in the manual that I could find either.
