SHIFT+B (RAM Preview)

Is anyone else having problems with RAM PREVIEW?

When I try to use it (either via shortcut or TOOLS menu) sometimes I get a 5-10 frame preview. No matter how long my selection is.

I have 1024DDR with NO OTHER PROGRAMS RUNNING.

Sometimes it doesn't even respond when I tell it to build a dynamic Ram preview. Anyone else? Any fixes?

How much RAM do you have allocated for previewing in your setup options? By default Vegas is set to 16MB, If you up that to like 256 or 512 you'll get much longer previews.

Just go under Options-Preferences, then under the video tab.
Under the Dynamic Ram Preview just jack that up a bit and you should be fine.

This may have got set back to 16 if you just upgraded to Vegas 5??

I've now got 800megs set for RAM preview. ( I have a total of 1024DDR)

Funny thing is.... I will get a loooong preview sometimes. Then all of a sudden when I try it again I get the 5-10 frame render. If I close V5 and restart it all of a sudden I have the full RAM preview again. But only for a few times then it's back to the 5-10 frames. Sometimes it doesn't even respond when I tell it to RAM preview.

Sony support said they've heard of this but haven't been able to reproduce it continuously. So since they can't reproduce it continuously and not too many people are complaining or experiencing it, it is not considered a problem.

I guess they are right... since no one else here has experienced it... I guess this is one I may have to work out on my own.

If I find a fix, I'll post it.

Thanks

I am using the Demo of Vegas 5 and I seem to have this problem. My experience is similar. I can RAM preview a section and it works just fine. I then move further down the timeline and try it on another section. It will render only a few frames. Maybe I'm missing something basic here but, it doesn't seem to work the same every time.

Patiently awaiting my emailed serial number....

I've run into the same problem - doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. I usually close the project and re-open it and it seems to fix it.

I am using a Trial version only, but I have problems with it missing frames the first time I hit SHIFT B command. I have to preview it again to get it to put all the frames into RAM. I have my setting at 512MB, so its not that. There definately is a bug.

Lamont (and others):

Is your external monitor on (button depressed)? I've run into this behavior (in V4) Before performing a RAM preview, turn OFF external monitor, then resources are freed for the RAM preview.

Yes, I've noticed that, too - that I have to turn off external preview to get it to work right. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

make sure you clear your RAM preview cache regularly too. This will affect previews after awhile.

In case anyone was wondering, online help says:

To clear the RAM cache during playback, you can resize the Video Preview window or choose a new setting from the Video Preview Quality drop-down list.
