Shorten lenghth of background music

I'm a newbie to this editing stuff but I managed to add background music on my video clip without totally eliminating the original audio track. My questions are, how do you cut or shorten the length of my music to match with the length of my video clip and how do you adjust the volume? And one more thing, how do you position the music to where you want it to start playing? Thnx in advance.

You can choose the starting point of the music the same way you trimmed the end of it; trim the beginning of the clip to the desired point. You can then move the clip left or right on the timeline to adjust how it synchronizes with the video. The simplest volume adjustment is the slider in the track header at the left of the timeline. This adjusts the volume level of the entire track. You can adjust the volume of just the clip itself by pointing your mouse at the top edge and dragging down. You'll see a line appear representing the volume level; as you drag it down you'll see the waveform shrink. This method only lets you reduce the volume though. Lastly there are volume envelopes (look in the Insert menu) that will let you adjust the volume throughout the clip if you need some parts louder or softer than others.

Thnx for the info but if I trim the starting point of my music like I did on the ending of my music, then the music won't start at its starting point but it cuts off the beginning like the intro or the first few lines of the song. What I want to do is start the music after a few seconds or minutes of the video.

I did manage to start the background music where I want it to start without trimming the beginning of the clip. First, I drag/drop video clip into timeline, then INSERT/AUDIO TRACK from Menu and double click on my mp3 file.Hit Video Preview and played it back. Now what happened was the music started when the video started. So what I did was close vv after saving to a veg file, opened up vv again and opened the veg file. My veg file is in the timeline. Deleted the file at left corner where you see NO. 1 until it is empty and timeline is also empty. Went to Media Pool, drag drop my avi file (not veg file). And then, I clicked the mouse on the timeline at any point of the video, then drag/drop the mp3 file to the cursor or to the point where I clicked my mouse and the music started exactly where I wanted it to.

Sounds like you're going through a LOT of extra work. All you have to do is move the mp3 clip left or right on the timeline to adjust where it starts. It's very simple and easy.

Left click on the audio and hold the left button down. Don't let go. Now, move the cursor to the right on screen. The audio clip should go with it. Make fine adjustments by enlarging the area (zoom) and picking the exact fraction of a second that you want it to start on.
