Should my timeline be stuttering?

I've got a mostly audio project that I'm editing in Vegas 6. There are 15 tracks, but only four or five of those tracks have content at any given time.

Yet ... every time I begin play from the timeline, the audio stutters badly for around 3 seconds before clearing up. I'm working on an HP laptop with 2 GB ram and an Athlon 3700+ CPU. To my mind, I shouldn't be having these problems. Any thoughts?

Along these lines, is there a post that outlines the recommended Vegas configuration (e.g. project file on one drive, media on another, never run anything from the system partition, etc_?

probley to much on the HD, it's fragmented & that's the problem. Or it's your C/swap file drive.

I'd recomend you getting an external HD for your laptop to edit on. he CPU/memory are more then good.

Is all your audio at the same sample rate as the project?

However I've noticed the same thing with video, the frame rate starts off very slow for the first few seconds before it hits the mark. Sort of like a buffer needs to fill up before it gets going.
