Show/Hide Markers? Simples!

Grazie wrote on 4/21/2010, 2:01 AM
I may have asked this before, if so apologies . . but, really for the love of all things Editing, isn't there a simple Show/Hide options for my Forest of Markers? Please? - Otherwise I will need to get out my CHOPPER! -And you really don;t want me to do that . . maybe somebody might, but that's another story . .

Seriously, isn't this a good idea? I don't want Promote Markers or delete or move . . just HIDE the suckers.

Of course, I didn't say this so you can't hold me responsible or anything but...
I'm pretty sure I heard one day that you can't turn off the markers.

Howzit Grazie my Boet I agree with you that would be helpful

I got used to editing with the lines off and just hit F8 when you need them to appear or arrange them or insert them

Gets my vote. Some of my projects have a lot of event markers and a lot of track markers, both with lots of text in them. All that is very handy (thanks for that SCS) but the downside is I can't see the what I'm doing for the markers.

Whilst on the subject of markers something I'd like, if I may :)

In Edit Details I can find/sort my markers. Now wouldn't it be nice if there was a button next to each row in the list that we could click and the T/L cursor moved to the point. As it stands now we have to copy and paste the TC.

Bob, that would be an excellent option to have!!

Grazie,

Marker Tool doesn't actually do much so we can only hope they have future plans for expanding it a bit...

BTW, everything seems real quiet on 9d which is a really good sign. Looks like 8c might have a replacement if I don't hear anything ugly in the next few weeks.

Bob,

I didn't know if you knew this but,
if you type in the Number of the marker while on the timeline (up to 99) the cursor will move to that position. You don't hit ENTER or RETURN, just type in 1 or 2, etc on the numbers at the top of the keyboard.

Grazie, I know you have Ultimate S Pro. Just go to the Marker tab and use the Load/Save Markers tool to save them to a file. Then use the remove markers tool to delete them all... then when you want them again, use the Load/Save Markers tool again to load them back from the file you saved them in. You can even save markers from one project and load them into another with this method.

The only caveat is if you move media around the timeline with ripple edit, the markers will not be aligned when you load them back in because they will load into their original positions. So it's not as nice as being able to hide them and have them move with media while hidden but it's still better than having them get in your way while editing.

Graham,

Thanks for posting this. In addition to your request I would also like to have track specific markers. Why you ask? Well, I was working on a project that included the same material with different people featured in each cut. I couldn't use Plural Eyes for this nor could I use multicam as sync'ing was impossible. However, each person said almost exactly the same thing and I was going to randomly choose which cut to use.

Things would have been so much easier if I could have had track specific markers. This way I would know that the first marker on each track corresponded to the first line, second marker= second line and so on. What would have been a quick edit turned into a long one!

Anyways, I didn't want to hijack your thread, I just wanted to add to it. :)

Wouldn't event markers do what you need?
RClick event, open in trimmer, add marker there.

Bob.

Possibly Bob. I have never taken the time to use the trimmer as I didn't think it fit in my workflow. I will have to give it a look and see. Thanks for the suggestion.

JR - yes. I posted this in exasperation of not have a simple solution. And yes yes yes . . deleting and moving and so on - nah, not so much! I even LOOKED in UliSpro for hiding markers - Delete and almost BBQ them for you too! But . . . no simple hide/reveal.

Bob, I'm at the Timeline I really don't want to start futzing messing with another function to show/hide - we have this for Event Info, so why on earth not for Markers.

Jazzeerrr - good suggestion - again!

Grazie go to options, Pref, general , and uncheck always draw maker lines “ 4 from bottom”, apply

When you want to insert markers or move markers hit F8 .disappear hit F8 appear .....simple

You will be in snap mode during edit when visible which is what you want when lining media with makers…yes?

Yeah . . been there . . . So when Xmas comes around and you open up that toy and you don't have any batteries? You know that feeling?

"Always Draw Markers Lines" - yeah . .right . . What they DON'T included with this is that you loose Snapping -IF you want to hide markers you also miraculously loose snapping - douh?!?

So, what it should say is "Always Draw Markers Lines, but don;lt expect you can hide these AND expect to retain Snapping - 'cos you can't - so there!" - Well I suppose SCS couldn't get that length into the "neat" width of the "Preference Menu" Yeah, that must be it - otherwise they would undoubtedly have included it? What yah think?

So, Xmas, "Snapping Not Included!" - They give with one hand . .and they . . with the other. This is just silly, and is lost in the mists of past programming - until now!

TAXI!

Grazie,

Don't know if it's a sensible suggestion or not (in which case sorry!) but could a script be written to do this? I guess Edward Troxel would be the one to ask.

Richard
Grazie wrote on 4/23/2010, 8:07 AM
Richard, that's a fine thought.

But as you can read above here, the other ScriptGuru we know - jr - pointed out one partial solution, which I did know about, but the point is that IF they (scriptors) could do this, they would most certainly would have had a go. As they haven't, I can only think that this stuff is not accessible by the scriptors.

I sent another Grazie-Wish to the "Mountain" along with suitable prays and offerings to the deities there . . . along with my favourite incantation

Is this option now available? Is there a way to temporarily hide the markers? :-).
