My laptop

I rarely clean it up or restore the image as anyone in my family room is free to use the guest account. The desktop is relocated to another
partition so it is not changed when I restore the image.

My eMail machine

I rarely care about anything left on the desktop. I'd nuke it in a minute.

My editing machine

I generally keep it neat and tidy.

Mine is same like yours. Pure black. On another system it's pure (middle) gray.

Here's the desktop half of my dual monitor setup on one of my machines. I use a program from StarDock called "Fences" to keep my program icons grouped together in different categories.

I was mildly interested in taking part. But after seeing John C's, NO WAY! Far too embarrassing.

Same here. Nothing to look at. But really to each his/her own. Organize how you like. Perfection is what works for you.

For me. One machine. Not a ton of software. A few different development systems (compilers) and VPN for biz. Office app. Chrome. For play. Photoshop+plugins and Vegas+plugins+mercalli+respeedr. Foobar200 for music. Misc utilities.

Only 6 items pinned to taskbar. Tray icons kept hidden unless they notify. A few items pinned to the start menu. I do pin some folders to the taskbar for quick access. One icon in the taskbar for many folders. I also setup folders in Favorites in the file explorer for quick access.

My desktop. (Windows 7 Ultimate)

Btw If you wanna fill up your desktop quickly, just render out an image sequence directly to your desktop :-D.

This is the desktop of my daily editing computer which is a Mac Pro:

Note the Vegas Pro 13.0 icon in my dock next to Sound Forge for Mac. This runs Vegas Pro using VMware Fusion in Unity mode so that it interacts with other windows on my Mac desktop without having to reboot into Windows with Bootcamp.

It looks like this when running:

The only thing I don't get is GPU support so I reboot using Bootcamp when I need GPU acceleration. All the other programs I use on a daily basis are Mac based so Vegas Pro is the only Windows application that I still use.

I always liked these NASA "night lights" shots:

Here's a "night shot" in a similar vein that I use for one of my wallpapers. It's the last landing of the Space Shuttle.

"Forget desktops, I want Rob's desk!!!!!! "

I actually just put it together about a month ago. The computer is built right into the back of the desk.

@ John Cline: could you please make new pics with better resolution ? or maybe pm me some ?

(me, a mere mortal, would like to watch-and-learn what programs you have at your fingertips :- )) but I can't read it on the current pics.

Edit: i.e. I'm installing your mentioned StarDock Fences right now.

I never really understood putting stuff on the desktop (hence my empty screens). My desktop is usually covered with what i'm working on. I put a few most needed programs in the quickstart bar, and then the rest on the start menu. That way it's at most 2 clicks to launch something, and i never have to show desktop or minimize open windows to find an icon to launch it.

My brother is exactly the opposite. At any given time he'll have 50 programs and 350 documents parked on his desktop. Drives me batty.

Well, if you got a under power PC with all the icon on the Desktop would definitely slow you down. If you got a really powerful desk PC with a 7.9 Windows index score across the board. All the desktop/program won't slow you down. At least this has been my experience.

Even on the fastest computer, one icon on the screen would slow me down because i'd have to minimize/move/hide windows to get to it.

I've got the 45 or so programs i use all the time on the popup start menu, so i click Start, then the program name, and it's launching. Takes maybe a second at most, no matter how many other windows i have open.
