Shuttle Pro 2 in Vegas 5... How is YOUR'S set up?

NickHope wrote on 9/8/2004, 2:32 AM
Sorry if this has been done to death but no harm in a recap eh?

1st question: In options -> prefs -> editing, what speed have you got your JKL/shuttle speed set to? Mine is set to "fast" (for now)

2nd question: How have you got your 15 buttons assigned?

As a veteran of 2 weeks, I've started with:

Button 11 = <CTRL>
Button 13 = <SHIFT>
Button 15 = spacebar = pause/play

I'm not using the other buttons yet, and would love to learn how experienced users have got their's set up.

Well, I'm still on the ShuttlePro "1", but I have the first three on the top row set to Excalibur, Tsunami, and Neon. I have the first three on the second row set to "Camera 1", "Camera 2", and "Camera 3". I have the last two on the second row set to Previous Marker and Next Marker. Haven't defined the last one on the top row yet.

Some of you guys have seen/tried the EZ keyboard from Bella? Just so I can get a comparison? I guess you get more assignable buttons with Shuttle Pro than with this keyboard but do you know if one can make a "turnaround" by assigning functions right on the keyboard with V5 mapping ?
Would it be exactly the same or am I missing something?

For example, would it be better to have these older keyboards from Bella (models without the shuttle wheel) and buy the Contour device instead of just buying the EZk-board ? Would there be any noticeable benefit?

Hard to say. I had to program a keypress to the scripts anyway. For example, I used something like Alt-Shift-1 for the camera 1 script. Now I *can* press that sequence to get the camera script to run. However, it's much easier to program the single button on the Shuttle to do the entire sequence without having to become a contortionist with my fingers. Either way you'll gain the benefits of the jog/shuttle wheel.

With the V2 model (and the ability to do multiple keypresses) it is even more flexible. For example, the button could be programmed to do an "Enter" - "Alt-Shift-1" - "Enter". This would stop the playback, add the proper camera change, and then restart the playback - on in a single button getting you very close to live switching. Lots of possibilities exist either way.

One hopeful final bump.

I don't have an SP2 - my SP1 lacks the 2 programmable buttons either side of the jog shuttle. Otherwise the same:

Top Row : Move Left to next Marker / Move to Left Event Edge / Move to Right Event Edge / Move Right to next Marker

Second Row: Post Edit Ripple (Ctrl-Shift-F) / Move Event up a track / Go to Timeline start / Move event down a track / NumLock (for my laptop)

Bottom Pair Left: Play Pause / Play Stop

Bottom Pair Right: Insert Marker / Split

Thanks for the feedback. I'm still suffering inertia in really getting going with it. I just keep going back to the mouse. Anyone else?

I just got a Shuttle Pro 2 today for Christmas from my in-laws (they are the coolest people). So I’m very interested in this topic too. I think the real answer is to watch YOUR editing style and see what keys you are always reaching for on the keyboard and then program those into the Shuttle. I like the first row set up the way it is in the Sony Vegas 5 template. I’ll definite reprogram some of the second row, but overall I can see what a timesaver this device is going to be. Especially in ACID where I can have the transport controls programmed in. Very sweet!

Bought a 2 for an early Christmas present. Very cool.

I've left the top row (1-4) as is. 6,7 also the same but seldom used.

10 and 12 are the same (space bar and enter).
8 is now preview edit, while 9 is the all-important UNDO!

15 is the delete button. All the others are John Meyer scripts (for which eternal thanks and a merry xmas!): 13 is select under cursor; 11 is the J-Cut; 14 is the split events under cursor; 5 is delete to beginning of event.

I took the rubber feet off mine and replaced them with pieces of 3mm thick double sided foam tape, leaving the downwards-side backing on so I can slide the thing around and get a bit of a grip of the sides of it. I know it's not a mouse but I just kept wanting to slide the thing around as I changed position and I couldn't. I think this is an improvement. It might still find its way onto Ebay though, with the rubber feet restored!
