I'm about to start sound mixing my short film and need to set the volume. Is there a way to generate the tone withouth having to go to "Print to tape"?
Not unless you've got the tone already. There are lots of -20dB tones on the web to be downloaded, we've got them on the VASST site along with other levels as well. Look in the "Free Stuff" pages.
You'd then create generated media/color bars, and place this tone beneath it for the duration of your bars.
The Free stuff can be found in this link.
Look towards the bottom, on the right hand side, it says "Test Tones" there. You'll want the -20dB for sending digital media to a broadcaster or replication house.
I'm wondering if someone can explain to me how to use the -10 and -20db tones to "set the volume." What does that mean exactly? Does it matter when submitting to film festivals, or just when sending out for broadcast/dupe? I'm pretty clueless on this topic, so any information would be appreciated.
