There's no way around that, the firewire port of the camera is already a few frames behind the action.
I have tried a setup like that, firewire into VCR and then composite from that to monitor. You are right, don't try to move or focus the camera looking at the monitor, very confusing.

On Location is pretty good though if you've got it. Comes with a couple of useful laminated charts as well.

Black Magic now have a more advanced app that runs with their cards. It is not cheap but is WAY cheaper than the hardware based scopes that it replaces.

CS3 PP came with OL on a separate disc with its own S/N. In effect it was supplied as a separate and independent app. Make sure that you get the disc and S/N or you're SOL.

OK, so I got OL CS3 installed on a laptop. When I hook up a Canon HV40 via the 1394 port, the scopes show signal but I get no picture on the laptop screen. The LCD rez is 1280x800; wondering if this is enough. When I switched the camera to SD a message came up on the virtual monitor "video signal is not available" or something to that effect.

Disable any webcam installed on the laptop. The OL forum has a lot of these problems discussed in depth:
