Simple question....

I am new to editing. I am taking a master that was used for VHS production on miniDV into Vegas.. Some of the transitions between the scenes are kind of short and I would like to either make them longer or have a slow fade to black. When I say scenes, I mean within one avi file that i'm workng from,,, is there a way to make both the audio and video have a fade,,,, maybe it's not really a fade I'm looking for, I don't want to have the content be fading out, but just a way to get some more black screen at the end of the scene? hope that made sense, not really even sure how to ask the question, thanks

Okay, in principle all is in front of you . . .Please say, as you use the term "master", that the master is in fact already edited or not. You imply that the "master" is edited by the use of the terms "dissolves" etc . . .this makes me think you already have video in some form of edit - am I correct? If this is the case you will realise that the dissolves etc will have "taken" away some of the footage already .. . This you can not recover - it's gone. BUT if you DO have the actual "uncut" "unedited" sequences then you are in business again - yeah? However, you can "fudge" some of the old stuff with a bit of video licence - hah?!

All the requests about introducing black and dissolves are easy. You got the footage .. Vegas will deal with it - yeah?

Try splitting the video to exactly where you want to add the black by using the "s" key. Move the right side of the video over and in the space add your black media. Overlap to create a dissolve.

yes it's a mastered miniDV that had been previously used to make VHS copies. I am now using it to author DVDs.... all I did was capture the tape to uncompressed AVI and opened it in vegas,,, I can do anything I need to to it, it's just I don't know how. It's gotta be possible to somehow split the event and add black and silence to it so that there is enough space for the chapters on the DVD to start and finish

and how exactly do I add the black? it's not just black that i want, I also want the audio to be silent too, and then have it pick up again after a sec or two

I don't have vegas in front of me, but you can go to media generators. There you can add your black (drag and drop). To fade audio or video, this is pretty tricky, but once you do it, you'll never forget. Take your mouse pointer to the end of the top edge of the event (or the edit that you split) until it turns into a quarter circle. Click and drag to the left to fade.

At the begiining...
Click and drag the beginning of the event (edit), top left, quarter circle, drag to right to pick up sound again. Having vegas add a volume (whatchamacalit, line pan, ) to the audio also helps. I think it's in tools>audio>volume pan?. My apologies for not being more specific.

when I add the black to the timeline, it stretches over the whole video from the insertion point, even tho I say I only want a second of it,,, why does it do that?

I've only been using Vegas for a 6 months or so. Your questions are very basic to the use of the program. I'd strongly recommend that you download the .pdf manual for your version of Vegas (here on this website under Support/Manuals. Everything you need to know is clearly explained in the Basic Editing Techniques portion of the pdf. Your time would be well served there, as the answers to all your questions would be right in front of you at all times.

in addition, if that is the only video track you are using after you split the event and move the right section it will automaticly be black in between. then just move your cursor to the top corner of each clip at the split and adj your crossfade.

Just takes a little practice.

To fade in/out

1. Hover at start/end of your clip. To fade it (start of vid) move cursor until you see the quarter circle.

2. Holding your left mouse down drag right and you'll see a blue line.

3. Hold and drag for the effect you want.

4. To fade out at end reverse dragging the end in back towards the vid.
