Simple Question - I'm Embarrassed

What am I doing wrong? I'm using Vegas Movie Studio-Platinum Edition. All I want to do is move to either the beginning or end of a selection.

According to the manual, which also applies to the full edition of Vegas, you make a selection by simply "clicking" on it. No problem. It is then highlighted. To move to the beginning of the selection you enter "Home" or to move to the end of the selection, you enter "End". Real simple. In fact, this is the same way that Premiere works.

However, after making a selection, when I hit Home, it moves to the beginning of the viewable timeline. Likewise, hitting End moves the cursor to the end of the viewable timeline, despite the fact that the selection is still highlighted. These are the actions, according to the manual, that are taken in the event that no selection is made.

This must be so simple. Help. Thanks.

I think the problem's with how you're selecting things. If you select a clip, then you get the behaviour you've described. You get the same behaviour if you don't select anything! You need to left click in a blank section of a track, keep the mouse button depressed and then move the mouse to select a section of the time line. Home and End will now work the way you've described.

I think that "home" and "end" will take you to the beginning/end of the display that you have on the screen. To get to the beginning/end of a clip (if I understand that's what you're asking), you move the mouse cursor until the arrow turns into a rectangle at the edge of the clip. Then a left click places the cursor at that point.

Now, selecting a clip and hitting the numeric keypad 7 or 9 will move the cursor to the beginning/end. But I think (heavy emphasis) that it also places youin a different editing mode, so I don't use that. But it will move the cursor as you asked.

Hope it helps.

Okay, I'll make a guess -- though I'm not at a computer with VMS installed.

To "Select" an event, I think you need to double-click it on the timeline. This will create a selection area covering just the event, the same as if you "drag" at the top of the timeline as Ian mentions. (Single clicking on the timeline selects the entire track, I believe.)

Try double-clicking the event, and seeing if Home and End work on just the selection area. (I can't try this myself to see if it works...)

I may be confused here but if you left click on an event(clip) it will select that video clip and audio. If you double click a clip it will create a loop region for that track. If you then want to move to the begining of the clip (not timeline) use CTLR+ALT+Left Arrow or Rt Arrow for beginning or ending respectively. It won't change the selection; it just moves the cursor. There may be other ways but this is the easiest way for me to work...

Thanks for the replies. Here is the answer (got it from someone on Videhelp.com). It is simple. Once you "click" on an event in the timeline and it becomes highlighted, you enter "[" to go to the beginning and "]" to go the end. Works great.

I'm new to Vegas and, unlike many, find it very confusing. I looked again in the manual and there is no mention of the above. I also struggled with how to mark the beginning and end points for deleting a segement. Finally figured that you enter "I" at the beginning, "O" at the end and then "Shift-L". At this point the selected time becomes highlighted and you can cut or delete it. Fairly simple--once you know how.

I think my problem is that I've only worked with Adobe Premiere for the last 4 years, which is very keyboard-oriented, unlike Vegas. Again, thanks for your replies.
