Simple Vegas Improvements

I've heard and seen the rumors/discussion in other groups about VegasVideo 3 coming out sometime in the next year (playing it safe). But I have a few suggestions that are so simple to implement I beg and plead that they be added if not already done.

1) When doing a render the only way to cancel the render should be to hit the Escape key (ESC) or manually click the Cancel button. I hate how now you can mistakenly hit the enter key or the space bar and it cancels a render. This happened to me once while doing a 30 minute render at the 30seconds remaining point. Needless to say I was pissed.

2) Vegas should remember the template you last used for any format. I often switch between doing AVI and WAV file renders. It sucks to have to reselect my prefered template everytime I switch back to a file format.

Those are my "simple" suggestions for Vegas improvements.

I second your first suggestion!! Also, a confirm delete after hitting the delete button when recording audio tracks.

Regarding the templates...you could simply save your own custom templates.

OK, i'll openly admit i'm not a Vegas user ... yet. But i do use Video
Factory, Acid, and Vegas Audio LE, all of which have the same
rendering step. Here's my dream feature ... a "Render Pause". Let's
face it, renders take forever! Sometimes i'd really like to use my
computer for another processor intensive task for a minute or two ...
watch a video clip a friend just eMailed me, burn something to a CD, etc.
and i don't want to wait 7 hours for the render to finish. I'd love to be
able to temporarily pause the rendering process and then restart it.

FYI, you can hit the tab key to move the focus away from the Cancel button (the dotted lines will disappear) and then you don't have to worry about errant keystrokes.

I would like to see internal, synched to audio, MIDI file playback (with channel mute/solo - I could live without MIDI editing...)

RE: Chienworks "render pause" idea. Does anybody know why computers are designed so that when you render, the machine just runs flat out at 100% CPU utilization until completion, instead of maybe breaking up a render job into automatically periodically saveable segments, so you dont lose an entire 12 hour render if something goes wrong at hour 11 ? This seems kind of like designing a car that only runs at 150 mph and wont restart if it stalls. Wouldn't a computer running a little slower, in order to maximize stability and insure render completion-which after all is the goal-be a better idea ? Does anyone out there know of software that will do this ?

Its not a computer problem. Its a software problem. Sonic Foundry designed Vegas to use all of the CPU power available. This is the easiest approach that most programs use. Optionally, the rendering code could have been designed to run in a different thread at a different priority level. However, writing this kind of code is difficult if you want to be able to run the software on multiple operating systems (not all Microsoft operating systems support all of these features). If you take a look at a program like Nortan AntiVirus, they have a CPU Utilization setting that you can select that ranges from low to high. However, this type of feature is difficult to implement properly in software. But just because its not easy doesn't mean that Sonic Foundry shouldn't implement it (but I bet it would be low on their list). But I do like the Pause idea. Maybe they could change their rendering dialog box to show a progress bar (with percent complete) along with a Pause and Cancel button.

I would like to see support for Dolby Digital Stereo and 5.1. As a minimum, some type of plug in should be offered that could be purchased if needed.

I'm gonna raise the stakes on my pause idea one step higher:

How about a pause button that then lets you shut down Vegas / Video
Factory / Acid / etc., even shut down the computer, then also has a
resume feature that lets you later on continue with the render from
the point where it was paused? Now that would be fantastic!
