- load the video into the timeline
- find the frame you want so that it's displayed in the preview window
- right-mouse-button-click on the preview window and select "Display at Project Size"
- click the little floppy disk icon above the righthand corner of the preview window
- a save dialog box pops allowing you to name the file; you may choose either .jpg or .png
- save the image into whatever folder you wish on your hard drive

The still image will then appear in the media pool. You can drag it to the timeline to use it. If you're editing with the standard DV template, the image will be 654x480 instead of 720x480. Don't freak out; this is correct and it will fill the frame properly.

This is how it works in Vegas Video, should be the same or very similar in Video Factory.

1. Put your video on the timeline.

2. Click on the timeline near where you want to take a snapshot.

3. Use the arrow keys while holdling down Alt to move to the frame you want so it is in the preview window.

4. Click on the little floppy icon above the preview window. Give the file a name, and click save.

It didn't work. When I go and save it I can only save it as a .vf file. I tried to just save it as a .jpg or a .bmp, it would save it as those but there wouldn't be any picture just the file name .bmp or .jpg.

It sounds like you're trying to save from the File / Save menu at the top of the screen. When you click on the little floppy icon it should bring up a save dialog box there that will let you choose .jpg or .png.

Still a no go, I can click on the floppy icon and it still wants to save it as a .vf file. That is the only choice I have.

Read V E R Y C A R E F U L L Y

There are two icons that look like a floppy disk. You're clicking on the wrong one. Click on the one that is above the preview window NOT the one on the Tool Bar.

There are not 2 floppy icons in my program. The only icon that I have is just at the top. Do I need to download any up grades. Believe me I have read everything that you and Chienworks have VERY CAREFULLY! I am greatful for the help but please dont treat me like I am a 10 year old kid.

Apparently it's possible to turn off the toolbar that shows the "capture snapshot" icon. Right-mouse-button click in the grey background area around the preview window. Check the "Show Toolbar" option. You should then see the correct floppy disk icon.

No can do on that either Chienworks. I have the following items in my tool bar, Project Video Properties, Video Output FX, Bypass all Video FX, quality selection and copy snapshot.
Chienworks wrote on 6/27/2002, 9:48 PM
Try the copy snapshot then.
