Skipping over portions of the timeline

I haven't posted here in a couple of years, but I'm still happily using Vegas 4. I didn't find the answer to my question by searching old messages, so forgive me if this has been answered before.

I'd like to be able to skip over parts of the timeline during playback and rendering - just mark them as non-existent, as if I selected that region and deleted it.

I don't want to actually delete it, because my master track is made up of a lot of edits from synchronized tracks below it, and I want to keep the master aligned with everything else in case I want to make adjustments to the edits later. I just want there to be a part of the timeline that is not played back, and the playback or render jumps instantly over that region, as if it weren't there.

I can't think of any way to do this. However, what i usually do when i want the same thing is to save the project as a new .veg file, then highlight and delete the sections i want to skip.

What you're looking for sounds like the "hide columns" feature in Excel where you can hide the columns and move through the spreadsheet as if they weren't there, but then "unhide" them and have them all back again.

Sound Forge has something similar where you can mark a region as deleted, but it still shows on the timeline. During playback, that region is skipped. You can then undelete the region.

In Vegas, I am pretty sure there are several scripts that let you save, remove, and then later retrieve regions. This would be one way to get what you want. However, I am not aware of a "delete region" feature similar to what is in Sound Forge. This is true even in the latest 6.0c release.

As Kelly and John have pointed out, there is no function as you describe.

However, there is no reason you can't delete a section of the timeline without preserving your sync down through the tracks.

Save your project in case you want to come back to the current state.
Select the region to delete
Hit Ctrl/A to select all events and tracks
Hit Delete
Hit Ctrtl/F to Post-ripple the gap together
Hit Ctrl/Shift/A to deselect everything.
