Sleep it off....

Last night I was 75% into rendering a one hour video when the power in our neighborhood went off. So while my APU was beeping I managed to put my PC into sleep mode. The power stayed off for an hour or so before I got sick of listening to the beeping noise and powered down the APU.

This morning I "woke up" my PC to discover that my video had resumed rendering! Elapsed time = 10:48:30 which makes me think the clock kept going during sleep mode. But what I don't understand is how the PC maintained sleep mode without any power at all?

I'm not complaining.

Like Cole Younger used to say, "It's a wonderment"

Could the PC have gone into "Hibernate" instead, where your RAM is saved to disk?

but that still requires power, doesn't it?

my wife's laptop would go in to hibernate even if it was already in sleep mode. Could be a default on the system.

Bios clock

I suppose when the power was cut off it may have gone from sleep mode to hibernate. I don't really thing the bios clock battery would come into play during sleep other than to do its normal job.

I was just reading an article in Maximum PC magazine that it's best to use sleep mode over shutting down completely. Power wise it hardly costs 12 cents a month more that shutting down for some one who uses his PC 16 hours a day as I do. And from the story, they say sleep mode is far improved over the buggy days when the system would never wake up.

I'd say it worked pretty darn good and my render came out fine. The secret is to have a backup power supply at all times which I don't think most people use.

id your UPS hooked up to your PC besides power? IE USB or serial cable? If so, it could of told the PC to go in to hibernate mode. That's what it sounds like.

And yeah, when sleep mode came out you had a 50/50 chance of waking it up. :D Now it's 100%! but depending on how many computer you have, $0.12 can add up. Schools, offices, etc. Remember, monitors go in to standby too. No reason to waste $0.12 if you don't need to (if you want to I'll give you my address to send the 12 a month. :D )

Happy, I'm going to try the sleep thing for a few days to see how I like it. Last night was the first time and it seemed to work fine. Though with my SSD boot drive my boot times are only 45 secs anyway and I get a fresh start every time. But if you still want/need the 12 cents, we can work something out. How about rotoscoping for 12 cents a frame? ;)

I never set up the UPS with the USB and all that so there's no smarts there.
