Slightly OT: How do I get to D:\Recycler\S-1-5-21....

Hey,
I just got a call from a local college that I did a TV ad for last spring. They want me to change the CG script and the voiceover at the end to use for next semesters' campaign. I still have the final .veg and the raw footage but apparently (like a knucklehead) didn't keep the .sfvidcap. I chose to "recapture all offline media" and it worked for some of the clips but not all (long story). Anyway I still had my .dar (DVDA) and when I open it wants to search for the .mpg and it finds it on one of the HDs under D:\Recyclers\S-1-5... Since I already told them I'd only charge $100 (I thought this would only take me a couple of hours) I think my best option at this point is to take that .mpg into V4, do another VO and music bed and cover the CG script at the end (showing dates of registration) with a lower third mask with the new CG script. Problem is, in Explorer, I cant find D:\Recycler... I'm sorry I've been so long winded and I have a feeling there is a very elementary answer but I'd certainly appreciate your help. Is Recycler like the Recycle Bin for my D: drive?? Can you tell me how to get that file into V4 to edit?
TIA,
Randy

In Windows Explorer, go to Tools / Folder Options / View. Click "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files". Apply / OK ... etc. Now the next time you open up the D:\ directory you should see a folder named RECYLCER. Click on it and in the right window you'll see one or more oddly named directories. Doubleclick the appropriate one and you'll see a list of files.

Yes, this is the recycle bin, XP style.

Thank you very much Kelly, I didn't even know I had a Recycle Bin on my other drives ; I don't know how you guys put up with me. Anyway, it's good to know I have them but it's great to know I have someone who can tell me how to find them : )
Thanks again Kelly,
Randy

Sorry to drag this up again Kelly (or anyone else) but I have another related problem: On a firewire hard drive, I IGNORANTLY deleted some files. I searched for this old post and followed the path Kelly suggested but this time I don't see the files I SO STUPIDLY deleted. I see deleted files from all HDs except the ones I deleted from this particular HD yesterday. This "Recycler" lists all of the deleted files from all drives. As a test I just created a text doc and then deleted it and it showed up in the Recycler but the .wav files (several "takes" used in Vegas edited in Sound Forge) I deleted are nowhere to be found. Where the heck could they be?!
TIA,
Randy

The recycle folder (Any of them) should show you all the files currently able to be restored. (The S-1-4-21... folders show up when you have multiple OS's or if you use the external drive on multiple PC's - but when you go into them they should still show all the files from all the recycle folders on your PC.)

If you performed the delete operation from another PC over the network, then they don't get put into the recycler. If you deleted them and that message came up that they are too big to fit in the recycle bin, then they don't go into the recycler. If neither of those cases apply to your situation, then I don't know how they could have disappeared unless you are running out of space on that drive.

In any case, if you have not written anything to that drive since you deleted the WAV files, you can most likely rescue them with a recovery tool. I recently used one called "Restorer 2000 Pro" and while it took almost a day to scan the firewire drive, it was able to pull 90% of the lost data off it.

Try some of the following Demos - I have just tried all of these and they all work well for various things. Some will find more than others, some also have a wipe/delete function.

R-Studio

Simpler way.

Double Click on the Recycle Bin. When the window opens click on View, arrage icons by, then pick a method you think is best. Everything in your Recycle Bin will be sorted. Scanning the list click on files you want to restore while holding down the Ctrl key. Now click on the green arrow and all the files you slected will be restored to the folders they were originally in. Like Magic. :-)

If the file isn't in the Recycle Bin its gone and you can't get it back without restore tools or rolling back to some earlier restore point which will DELETE current stuff so be careful with that option!
