Slooooow MPG on timeline

Imported from a DVD to the timeline to re-edit in 7e. It's about 35 minutes and 2+Gbytes of mpg.

Unusably slow. Click on the timeline and wait 10 minutes for the app to return and show that frame in the preview. Scroll along the timeline and wait at least 10 minutes for that section to load the thumbnails.

No effects, no nothing. Just a single video track. Do I just have to render out to DV to be able to edit? I don't expect stellar speed with a compressed media file but come on, this is not usable.

I've seen this happen before with certain mpeg2 files. It probably has something to do with the way it was originally encoded. It could be the GOP structure or end sequence markers or a number of other things. I've only encountered this a few times and 90 percent of mpeg2 I throw on the timeline works just fine and is very responsive.

I love Vegas, but I use http://womble.com/MPEG Video Wizard[/link] for re-editing DVDs because it is a whole lot faster and saves a render since it smart-renders the mpeg.
