Slow Motion FX feature cuts off video, with no way to see the full vid

twinbee wrote on 8/25/2022, 5:24 PM

I have a video with 25 frames. When I add a Slow Motion FX to the clip and set the Playback rate to 0.25, the video does slow down by four as you'd expect, creating intermediate frames due to its amazing AI algorithm.

Problem is: It's only playing a quarter of the original video.

To try and solve this, the obvious extending the length of the video to 100 frames in the timeline doesn't help. That results in playing a quarter of the video four times in total. In other words, four times of the first quarter repeated.

Second attempt at a solution was to click "Adjust Event Length" in the Slow Motion settings window. This unfortunately just does the same as the previous attempt. We get four times of the first quarter repeated.

Searched almost everywhere to no avail. Finally I come across this video: - which explores the issue and finds a way to solve it by using a menu dropdown: Tools -> Extensions -> Adjust Length of Slow Motion Plugin.

Unfortunately, I can't see any submenu items in this Extensions menu dropdown on my version of Vegas Pro 20 Build 139 (fully paid) on Windows 10.

This is what he sees: https://i.imgur.com/fwOVKO0.png

Any way to make this menu option show, or any other way to work around the issue?

Apparently, it was fixed for v17, but the option now seems to have disappeared again.

Why not just load those images to your post here instead of requesting people go to a different website to see it?

@twinbee
For this effect you don't need that extension of that video .
Vegas 20 has that normal Slow Motion effect.
After setting the amount of slowdown you have to click the button for "Adjust Event Lenght".
In my video you see the video becomes that amount longer and not the audio:

Edit:
After rendering I see that you are right and I was wrong.
Better was for me not to comment not knowing what that FX did.
Normally I always use for speeding up or slowing down Ctrl- drag left or right.
Sorry

@j-v The OP already stated they'd tried that,

@twinbee I get the same in VP19, i tried all options but none would make this work, it's always been a bit jumpy but in the past it did sort of work, now it doesn't work, I didn't change settings in Preferences to see if i could get it to work. try turning off your GPU in File I/O see if that makes a difference,

@jetdv - Sure I can do that going forwards, but sometimes when I insert pictures into a forum post, it breaks up the flow of text. I'd already uploaded those images to imgur (a very famous image site), so I thought why not reuse them. What'd be nice is if the clicked link would auto-expand *inline* within this site, so it'd require less clicks for the user to go back and forth. Some site forums I recall do that, and it'd improve the experience. Another subconscious reason is because for uploading to forums, you need to save the image to the desktop. With imgur, you just paste the image from the clipboard, job done. Again, it would be great if the forum software allowed you to directly paste the image into the post you're writing, negating the need to: a: Find a location and save the image locally, b: click the upload button, c: navigate to the file location, d: select and open the file. I'm sure you'd agree that'd save everyone a lot of time!

@Former user - exactly right and nice video! Yep, I tried disabling the GPU, and trying the other GPU option (as shown in the image below), but to no avail. Is this a bug then? It isn't just a glitch with the plugin, but totally breaks it, so this seems like a high priority thing to fix.

@twinbee I don't know if it's a bug or just dated software, I get the red msg eventually warning of insufficient GPU but i've got an RTX 3090 SUPRIM, I've wrote on other posts where people struggle with this fx with no eventual solution, I don't use it n personally think it's crap, I suspect it will never get fixed.

@Former user I have the very latest v20 Build 139, so I doubt it's because yours is outdated. Why don't you like the Slow Motion FX may I ask?

twinbee wrote on 8/26/2022, 1:39 PM

By the way, to help others who are having this problem: One simple, but kludgy workaround is to firstly extend the video which is simply repeated x amount of times (so if you wanted 0.5x speed, you'd repeat it once, if you want it 0.25x speed, you'd repeat it 3 more times). HOWEVER, instead of slowing that down with the Slow Motion plugin immediately, INSTEAD, save it out as a video. Then, load that "repeated video" back into Vegas as a new video clip. Thus when the Slow Motion feature is used, it 'fools' Vegas into rendering essentially the whole thing, because the first section BECOMES the whole thing. Works perfectly, though a kludgy way of doing it!

@j-v Sure here you go: https://imgur.com/a/3qrREI3

I tested it to make sure by saving out this version and using it in Vegas, and once again, the Slow Motion plugin fails in the same way when I try to set half or quarter speed etc.

@twinbee
Let it be, I don't want to download from that site.
Did you already tried the stretch mode to slow down?

@j-v imgur.com is one of the biggest image hosting sites on the net. See the Wiki page.

Dropbox needs you to sign up for an account, so it's less convenient than Imgur, where you can just paste it almost immediately.

If it helps, here's the direct link to the mp4: https://i.imgur.com/2zqjf6R.mp4 - Chrome won't download that - just play it within the browser, since modern browsers directly support MP4 files.

Did you already tried the stretch mode to slow down?

Slow Motion doesn't just make it slower, but inserts frames between to enhance the smoothness.

EDIT: Ah, this forum lets you attach the video directly. Click it to enlarge, and then click "Save video as" and you'll get it that way too.

@twinbee Uploading videos on this forum is no good if you want to try someones file out, because it gets changed when uploaded, but uploading to Google Drive etc, you get the orig unaltered file,

PS, try Selectively Prerender after you've clicked Adjust Event Length, that seems to work,

@Former user Ironically, it changed it to what I kind of intended (25 frames-ish), rather than what I accidentally uploaded to imgur, which was the 50 frame version. I say "ish", because the forum weirdly added 2 frames on top to make 27 frames instead of 25.

Here's the proper 25 frame version I should have given in the first place: https://imgur.com/a/PfkYHxQ

Now if you try Slow Motion and then "Selectively Prerender" on THAT, you'll find very weird artifacts in the video preview (see attached image). However, the full saved output render seems to work okay with your "Selectively Prerender" technique!

PS, try Selectively Prerender after you've clicked Adjust Event Length, that seems to work,

Hmmm, yours (the 50 frame version) looks good in the video preview! But if you render it out, you'll see it as jerky again, even though the project and video file is set to 60 frames a second. It does 30fps and skips every other frame.
