Slow Motion in VMS

Hi all.

I am getting varied results with slow motion in VMS. I have VMS 10 Plat suite.

I have a Canon HF20 and I am shooting in HD. (MXP)

I have found the best results are shotting in 30P (vs. 60i) and using a faster shutter speed, 1/250 or up, depending on light.

But here is my question, does VMS actually try to create fames in between or does it just repeat the previous frame to fill the gap. Maybe a simple stick drawing can help.

Original footage frames

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0

If I slow that down does VMS create the following

1 1 1 2 2 2 3 3 3 4 4 4 etc

Or does it try to fill in the gaps with actual generated frames based on the prior and next, say something like this.

1 1a 1b 2 2a 2b 3 3a 3b etc .

Thanks
Art

What you are seeing is called "resampling". It is indeed generated frames, that make things look "ghosted". It's best practice to disable it. Select the video-only clips in the timeline, right click, Switches, Disable Resample.

For best slow motion it's best to shoot in 60i btw, then use the tutorial here:
http://eugenia.queru.com/2009/02/09/butter-smooth-slow-motion/
to make the footage true 60p at 540p (so it would be 60p at 1920x540 instead of 60i at 1920x1080). Then you can slow down that at 0.400x exactly in the event's properties dialog, to make it a true 24p.

Regardless, always disable resample before you export.

Thanks for the tutorial, just what I needed.

I have started in the Vegas Only option and have set everything up as you suggest.

Did Match Media,
"For the de-interlacing option select “interpolate”, and for the Quality option select “Best”. For frame rate use 59.940 for NTSC videos, or 50.000 for PAL videos."

I don't have a 59.9xxx rate, only 29, 25 and 24.9.

The is VMS10 Plat

Did I do something wrong ?

You type it.

It's interesting how many people don't know that they can type on these and other fields on Vegas. It's a question I get a lot... :D

Thanks, must be Friday, I never thought of typing, just assumed you had to select what was there.
