Slow Motion Limit?

BlacktipH wrote on 10/13/2011, 8:46 AM
I caught a very cool clip of something that happened in a time interval of less than a second (00;19). I cropped the clip and held "ctrl" and slowed down the clip. I noticed that I can only slow down the clip so far before Vegas won't let me anymore. I want to make the clip slower, but I can't. Is there a limit on how slow you can make a clip with Sony Vegas? If not, what can I do to achieve a slower motion?

Render the stretched clip to a new file, put that on the timeline, and stretch some more.

Or Insert->Video Envelopes->Event Velocity; Set your Velocity; Drag the Video Event til you see the gray triangle thingy.

Just a little more detail because I struggled with this "once upon a time" You can drag the envelope up or down, but it's tough to set an exact reduction (e.g. 30 %).

1) Right Click on the far left envelope point (assuming you haven't added an additional points on the envelope).

2) Select the "Set to..." option.

3) Choose your poison.

Thank you very much Jerry! I got everything except "Drag the Video Event til you see the gray triangle thingy." I dragged the clip very far and never saw the gray triangle? Do you have a screen shot what it looks like?
amendegw wrote on 10/13/2011, 11:01 AM
Ha! That will teach me for using technical terms [chuckle]

The gray triangle thingy:

You will want to snap to the gray triangle. I extended beyond it, just to get a good screen capture.

btw: you may have to right-click on the video event and "disable resample". Try it both ways and check your render quality.

lol thank you very much!

I apologized for my ignorance, I'm new at using the velocity envelope. I have one more question, what does the gray triangle indicate in the timeline?
amendegw wrote on 10/13/2011, 11:21 AM
It's the indicator that marks the last frame of the event. For example, if you have a 5 sec event and you set the Velocity to 50%, the gray triangle will show up at the 10 sec. mark.

Assuming you have the "Loop" switch set (right click on the event), if you drag further than that triangle, your event will loop back to the first frame of the event. If you unclick the "Loop" switch and extend, you will merely extend a freeze of the last frame in the evert (Thanks, Grazie!!).

If you want, send the clip to me (or put it in dropbox or somewhere public). I have twixtor, so I can run it through and see how slow we can go. :-)

amendegw wrote on 10/13/2011, 12:06 PM
Hey, anatavism. I have an old (1997, Hi8) that I'd love to get a good slomo on. Could you run it through Twixtor for me? I'm only really interested in the middle 6 secs or so in a 12 second event, but I figure it's better to do the whole thing & I can split the event later. It's here: ChrisBicycle.zip I'm thinking about a 20% rate would be a good value.

Do this for me and you will be granted the DEE-luxe coupon good for whatever Mercalli V2 stabilization I can do for you.

Note to BlacktipH: Twixtor will do a much better job of slomo than Vegas Velocity Envelopes - but it's an expensive plugin.

Jerry,

I don't have Twixtor but use instead the free motion-estimation MVTools2 software that, among other things, can create slow motion. I created slow-mo of the middle 6 seconds at 25% normal speed, and uploaded the result here:

Bicycle Kick 25% normal speed - MVTools2

I'll be very interested in your opinion of how this compares to the result produced by Twixtor.

Here is the AVISynth script I used:

loadplugin("C:\Program Files\AviSynth 2.5\plugins\MVTools\mvtools2.dll")

setMTMode(5)
AVISource("E:\frameserver.avi").Killaudio()
setMTMode(2,0)

# the following is for DV, change to bff for HD
assumebff()

#converttoyv12(interlaced=true) #Use this if incoming video is RGB

source=Bob()
super=MSuper(source,pel=2)

backward_vec = MAnalyse(super,blksize=8, overlap=2, isb = true, search=3 )
forward_vec = MAnalyse(super,blksize=8, overlap=2, isb = false, search=3 )

# "num" equals result of 30 fps, times 2, multiplied by slo-mo factor
# So, 60000 equals normal speed; 120000 equals 50% normal speed, etc.
# For PAL, num=50, den=1 equals normal speed, so go from there

MFlowFps(source,super,backward_vec, forward_vec, num=240000, den=1001, ml=500)

assumebff().separatefields().selectevery(4,1,2).weave()
assumefps(29.97,true) #Change this to match final framerate (25 for PAL)

johnmeyer,

That's very, very good! Once I get the Twixtor results back, I'll make a short YouTube video and post it back here (probably in a new thread).

A month or two ago, I rebuilt my computer and have not yet re-installed Avisynth and VirtualDub. Guess I'm going to have to do that sooner rather than later. I was kinda waiting for Debugmode Frameserver to come out with an official / free version for Vegas 10 64bit. Any news on that? I haven't been checking.

I guess this is might just kick-start by 16mm Home Movie project.

Thanks so much!

Nice little diversion during my lunch.

I've only worked with progressive video before, but Twixtor does a good job on the interlaced stuff. Great move BTW...it's a Pele!
