Slow Motion using Velocity Envelope

I tried the velocity envelope for the first time, and the result was very disappointing, but I didn't know it until I printed to tape.

I pulled the envelope down to 34% to a give some significant slow motion. In the video preview window, it looks fine. But after printing to tape and looking at the project on miniDV, that particular clip (and only that clip) has a really obnoxious jitter that is certainly not preferable. Anyone know what's going on?

There are some settings or check boxes that help smooth or remove jitter from clips like this. Have you tried looking in the help file?

There is serious limitations on just how far you realisticaly push slomo.
To create the effect additional frames have to be created, some of the setting in VV affect how this will be achieved and it does as good as job as anything. I've always made a point to render any slomo to a new file first and bring that back into the project, it just gets too confusing otherwise.

As a rule of thumb I wouldn't go below 50% and try to keep things in even multiples might help a bit.

But as I said at the start there are serious limitations in the process, that's why the pros spend a fortune on special cameras that shoot at a higher frame rate. If you cannot afford these (including me) a bit of planning before hand will improve the shot. Try to have a few things moving as possible will reduce how noticable the poverty pack slomo looks ie static shots with only the subject moving or else very slow camera movements.

I don't mind the affect of additional frames being created, but I don't understand why adding frames must create jitter, and why it does not look jittered on the video preview but does on the miniDV tape.

When you said, "keep things in even multiples", what did you mean? The other reply on this thread also mention additional settings relating to slow motion -- what are they?

thanks for the help,

I don't know for certain, but would "Supersampling" help in this case?

If it's just a single event and other events slowed down are working fine:
Did you check right mouse button menu on the event?
enabling switches -> reduce interlace flicker might help
and switches -> smart or force resample as well

Thomas

P.S. I use slow mo frequently, but it didn't create any jitter for me, but it blurs of course due to interpolation of frames.
