slow preview

I recently had to replace my C: drive (OUCH !) and now that I'm back trying to edit with my V6 I'm having extremely slow/jerky previews. I've experimented with various preview quality resolutions (draft, good, best) and still have the problem. It wasn't like this with the previous C: drive and I'm wondering if there is some setting I haven't gotten right that is bogging down my previews....
Any suggestions? It's become very hard to "see" how the video is aligned with the audio now that its so slow.
Thanks,
Teaktart

Is DMA active on the new drive?

My computer died again....just got it back....
I don't know what DMA refers to, could you please tell me what it is and what to do?

My "repair" was some kind of cable that got replaced but I'm still noticing that I can only preview with a very small window to keep it from lagging.

I have V6, XP, P4@ 2.4 Ghz, 1 Gb memory..... guess I might be hitting the limits on what this can process?
Thanks for your help,

Right-click "My Computer", choose Properties, click on the Hardware tab, click on Device Manager, Click on IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, open the Primary IDE channel (and/or the secondary IDE channel) and look on the Advanced Settings tab. That will tell you what mode it is operating in (should be either DMA or PIO).

Following your instructions I found on the Primary IDE it is "currently tranferring with "Ultra DMA Mode 5" and on the
Secondary IDE "currently transferring with "Ultra DMA Mode 2 "....

Got to admit I don't have a clue what that all means but it looks like its set up the way you would recommend? The only other choice available for transfer mode would be the "PIO only" option.....

Thanks for your help,

Yes, you want DMA so it sounds like that is correct.

What else is running in the background?

Do you have current drivers installed for your hardware?
