Slow Rendering in Version 14

david-dedrick wrote on 2/10/2018, 12:10 PM

Hey guys,

I have looked everywhere including here and Dr. Zen's and all over the web for some comments on how slow the rendering is on Vegas Move Studio Platinum 14 compared to version 12 (the one I have been using for several years). I didn't find anything so I thought I would add a post here.

All things being equal, the rendering for all video files, (audio is not quite as bad but still takes longer) takes almost twice as long in Version 14 as it does in Version 12.

I am using the same computer, same templates, same general preferences etc.

Has anyone else experienced this? If not, is there something I might be missing?

That is very interesting Cornico. I notice you do not have version 12 in your samples. I guess you probably don't have that particular version to try. I do not have version 10 or 13 to try but I am sure your examples are accurate. I have tried many different ways in my comparisons between 12 and 14 with the same results, 12 is almost twice as fast as 14.

I am just trying to figure out why this is. Maybe I have a setting wrong in 14 or something of that nature. I don't think so, but I would welcome any thoughts on what my problem might be.

Thanks for input Cornico!

If you are using a much older generation Graphics Card like myself, you need to turn on a new setting that is only in Vegas Movie Studio 14 Platinum. Make sure to have build version #148 installed!

Go to Options/Preferences/General and turn on Allow legacy GPU rendering

Also don't forget to turn the GPU on in Video preferences.
Go to Options/Preferences/Video and select your GPU in the GPU Acceleration setting.

Derek

Thanks Derek, I tried your suggestion but it actually made rendering slower in both 12 & 14. It's no doubt due to my low end video card (GeForce GT 640) I have looked at upgrading. Now might be a good time.

And Cornico, thanks for your time in helping here. Very frustrating.. I will get more information as to what I have going on at my end and get back with you guys. Thanks again!!

@david-dedrick

It's definitely your low end Graphics Card that is part of the problem. Your CPU is responsible for doing most of the heavy lifting.

I have a GTX570, which is a much older card, but it works extremely well in all versions of Vegas.

Remember that Vegas Movie Studio 15 Platinum is being released very soon and I expect it will include the dramatically improved support for all Nvidia GPUs, the same as what Vegas Pro 15 uses. Also improved support for Intel Integrated Graphics rendering. Most VP15 users have reported dramatic render time improvements with the new GPU support.

david-dedrick wrote on 2/12/2018, 5:52 PM

Great to hear of the fast approaching release of version 15. I am looking forward to the improvements but I still think I may go ahead and upgrade the Nvidia card. Some of the templates I use all the time do make use of it when rendering.

I didn't know Windows 10 has that kind of ability. Pretty cool. Guess it rules out the GPU in this case.

I am going to do more testing to see if I can find where my problem is. It has to be something I am not doing right in 14. I just upgraded to 14 (build 148) about a month ago... do you think a re-install would be worth my time?

Thanks again, guys!

david-dedrick wrote on 2/13/2018, 6:37 PM

Ok, I will get on that and get back asap!

Thanks

I rendered the file below, which is typical of most of my videos, in both 12 and 14 using the unaltered template (MainConcept MPEG-2 Program Stream NTSC Widescreen). The video is a raw clip with nothing from Vegas added such as transitions, fades etc. Just the video. (I used the "Match Media Video Settings" option in project properties) to set properties in both 12 & 14.

I made sure all preferences and settings were the same in both.

Render time in 12 was 1:25

Render time in 14 was 2:57

I have tried several different render template with the same results.

Please let me know what you think or if you need more info. I hope I understood what you were looking for as to the information needed.

Thanks Again. I appreciate your time spent on this issue.

Thanks Cornico! I see that your renders are basically the same time. I will keep looking at my end to try and find the reason for the slow render in 14.

As for the template I used, it was requested by the TV station that broadcasts our church's weekly show. I am far from being very educated in this part of video production. If you don't mind, could you suggest a better template (one that would retain the HD) for rendering the videos I am shooting? I understand if you would rather not.

Thanks for all your help! When I do find where the render problem is coming from I will post that here.

EricLNZ wrote on 2/14/2018, 8:59 PM

If you are downgrading HD to SD then you cannot "retain the HD". You are chucking out over three quarters of the image detail. Are you sure the TV station wants SD?

If SD is required you could try improving your downgrades to SD by not simply just using a SD render template. Search the forum and you will find several threads over the years on getting better quality SD from HD. But it depends on the amount of time and effort you are prepared to spend.

david-dedrick wrote on 2/16/2018, 4:12 PM

We send programs to several stations. Two are local public access and require a DVD due to the use of older equipment. The other is a regional broadcasts that we pay for. When we were getting our first show together for the regional station they sent these requested settings:

Mpeg-2 Transport Stream or Mpeg-2 Program Stream
File extension: mpg or mpeg
Constant Bit Rate

Video Settings
Mpeg-2 audio embedded
Video : Mpeg-2
Video Bitrate: 6-8 mbps
Picture Resolution: 720 x 480

Audio Settings
Bitrate: 128 kbits / sec
Sample Rate: 48 khz

I am not satisfied with the quality of the picture we send them and would like to upgrade to a higher quality even if we have to pay more for it.

I guess my question for you guys would be if I am able to upgrade to a HD broadcast, what basic template would you recommend I go with and what custom settings, if any, would you suggest?

My knowledge is pretty limited in this area so any help at all would be much appreciated. Thanks!

david-dedrick wrote on 2/16/2018, 7:17 PM

That makes perfect sense. I will try to get with them and see if it will be possible to deliver a HD file for broadcast. I will get back with you just as soon as I get an answer. Thanks for your patience and help!

Win10 64bit. Intel i7-8700k.
Only 20% - 40% of the CPU is used during rendering.
10 second movie is rendered 20 seconds.
Why?

I'm using Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 14 and this week my 60 min 1080p video rendering from 1080p mts files with brightness contrast sharpening and noise ajustment is taking me 24hrs to render out.

Yes I've used all the recommended settings and am using CUDA.

Rendering started 5pm yesterday.. at 10am it was only 60% rendered with an estimated 4.30pm completion.

A 60min video @ 30fps gives 108000 frames needing rendering. So, if my math is right, my project is currently rendering at around 75 frames per minute . Most cetainly the slowest I've experienced.

This has not happened before with all the other videos rendering within 4 to 5 hours at most.

I'm persisting with this slow render because I've only got 6 hrs to go.

I'm unfortunately away from my computer otherwise I'd list my setting.

I look forward to following this discussion. Thanks to all participants.
