Slow rendering with MPEG1 and 2 and other components

TomM wrote on 2/27/2002, 9:33 PM
- using VideoFactory 2.0c with the new MainConcept MPEG1 and MPEG2 Professional components

- computer is 700 Mhz Pentium, 256MB RAM
- disk capacity is 30GB + 160GB not fragmented
- OS is Windows XP Pro (but also same problem with Windows 2000 Pro)

- the "Alaska Trip" 30 seconds demo that comes with VF2 renders in about 5 minutes
- a 5 minute video clip renders in about 30 minutes
- a 1 hour 59 minute clip renders in about 10-11 hours

Can anyone advise me on how to speed the rendering up so I can get my work done on this stuff?

I have looked at other slow rendering entries in the forum and tried those tips but to no avail.

Thanks for any help anyone can give.

Your render times seem about right for your processor. The only way to speed it up is to either reduce the quality (even more), get a faster processor and more memory or add a hardware encoder.

So are you saying that there will be a factor of 5 or 6 in rendering regardless of anything that I do with this processor? Also would you expect pretty much a linear change in the rendering time if I double or triple the processor speed? Will more cache memory help with rendering?

Thanks.

If it's any help I can tell you that my 700mhz Duron PC renders at a factor of about 6 times while my 1.4ghz Athlon renders at about 1.2 times. Both have the same amount of RAM, etc.

I think I have solved my problem for now even though I think it could still render faster if something else was available. I upgraded from the 700Mhz to 1.67Ghz Athlon, 512MB DDR ram (with 128 bit bus). It is certainly a screaming system but the 2 hour movie that once rendered in 11 hours now renders in about 4 hours. Almost a 3 fold increase in speed. This tells me that the process isn't being helped too much by a smarter processor with better and more cache to the extent you might expect. Still four hours is a long time. If it were closer to 3 hours I would consider the problem to be resolved which would be comparable to what I have heard from you guys and others. I am still a bit perplexed so I will keep searching for answers. Thanks for the comments. Isn't this a fun hobby!!!
